Hotel on train route London - Edinburgh

Encourage my laziness,

Agreed to go with the Mrs to something she’s speaking at in London, I’m my stupidity I thought
“I’m not paying silly money just to sleep there, when she’s done will use it a a springboard & have a night away somewhere else”. but my plans are off.

I have learned -
London City no flights on Saturday Afternoon/evening
Night Riviera Sleeper Train run every day except a Saturday….

She won’t finish until 5 in Centre of London? So realistically by the time we get out to some airports we’re looking at departure times after 20:00 at earliest & then it gets too late arriving anywhere for the night just to head home on Sunday. (Unless anyone has suggestion)

So I thought why not break the journey North, I looked at the LNER route map & to be honest haven’t really heard of some of these stops to even know what’s there. Did try sone google but then thought it might be an idea to ask.

Have done the odd Saturday night in Newcastle, on stag do’s (we like food & last time there I had a walk to see if their “Chinatown “ was worth a visit but I didn’t think so)

Open to suggestions…

Is there much point breakign the journey to arrive in say York and get to a hotel at 11pm?
Why not stay near King Cross, have a nice dinner, 8am train and home in time for lunch?

York or Durham the rest on the east coast main line is best avoided

The OP could get to York in under 2 hours.

Alternatively, he could get the 18:00 train and be back in Edinburgh for 22:38.

Because the trains I’m looking at are 2hrs between Kingscross & York, I could have a nice dinner in York, then a long lie

Apologies, I did misread your timings a bit.
That said, there are flights on BA from Heathrow at 2100 and 2150 on Saturdays... might be an idea especially if your date is a LNER strike day...

Easy enough to get from central London to Heathrow on the Elizabeth line in time for one of the late Edinburgh flights.

But I'd also ask when we're talking about as London hotels don't have to be expensive. Just a very quick search based on this being next Saturday and you could have an evening/dinner in London, both stay in the Atrium Hotel next to Heathrow T4 for £75, and just jump either the bus or train from T4 to T5 to catch a Sunday flight home.

No probs!

We did actually sit and look at the departures boards online at the weekend to see where flights went, but nothing really in striking distance & arriving at a sensible time.

Train benefit is can actually start travelling somewhere immediately & not have to travel to airport/security/checkin etc

I’m going to look at York but have actually struck on the idea of dinner & overnight in Lille, then lunch in Brussels/Paris & fly home Sunday evening.

Rush hour trains north out of London are horrible experiences. I would stay over in London and travel in the opposite direction to most the following morning.

Although I don't think he's stated it explicitly, I gather that he would be travelling on a Saturday evening, so perhaps the rush hour bit might not apply?

Thanks for assistance & ideas,

To be clear I’m not really after doing on the cheap or trying to get home.

In my head London is a hub & I had hoped to pivot out of there on Saturday evening & eat in a French/Dutch/German establishment Saturday night & Sunday lunch . (Look at London city airport departures on a Friday evening, Frankfurt/Amsterdam/Zurich/Milan etc)

I’m going to investigate Lille & York

(If neither of them work out, she may be going down on her own as I’d only be keeping her company travelling & then catching up with a mate through the day)

Stopping over in York seems too much hassle, you might as well sit it out all the way to Edinburgh once you've gone to the effort of getting onto the train.

Might be worth investing in a First Class ticket for the return journey instead of a hotel. (if the trains are running obvs.)

Prague? There’s an 8pm outward on the Sat eve, but your problem would be getting back. The return to Edinburgh is in the morning which leaves zero time to explore on the Sunday.

Amsterdam? Haven’t looked at times but figure it’s a similar problem returning.

I like the OP’s thinking, sort of where my mind goes. Think Lille + Paris may be most ‘exotic’ destination you could get to work.

What about Eurostar to Brussels or Paris Paris? There is a train to Paris every hour in the evening on Saturday and Brussels there is a train I think it was 7 pm. You could then fly back from either destination direct to Edinburgh I would’ve thought.
