18 year old's driving licence expires on 70th birthday?

My son had an alarming experince when using his DL for ID for his age the other day, having just turned 18.
Bouncers at a bar/club almost confiscated his DL as a fake as the expiry date (line 4b) was the day before his 70th birthday (i.e. xx July 2076) instead of, as they said, 10 years after the issue date (which would be 2034 I assume, 10 years after he passed his test).
From what I can see on my own licence and others - and after a quick Google, they're right - it shouldn't be expiring at his 70th birthday (well, the day before).
Is this a DVLA error, or is something else afoot?

It is simple, the photo expires in 10 years, the driving licence entitlements expire on your 70th birthday (for cars/bikes). Well, it should be be simple I agree but the 4b date (on the front of the card) is the day before his 70th birthday matching the dates on the rear of the card. So not so simple.

He can go all the way to his 70th birthday without having to change the picture. I'd get some evidence that the licence is correct, as I think that it could be problematic in the distant future. DVLA's records probably say that his licence expires in 10 years, even though his licence doesn't say that.

I remember getting my licence in 1979 and seeing it expired in 2032, and laughing about how ridiculously far away that was. Bloody hell, it's only 8 years away now 
I passed the test in 79 too, so just checked mine, and it is 2031, now I feel very old 
I also noticed the front date expired a couple of weeks ago, and HGV/PSV expires next month too, best get that sorted, wonder if I will get 5 years this time, or just until I am 65. The joys of age lol.

Out of interest as your card has now expired does that make it " illegal " to drive and hence any insurance should the worst happen be declared invalid ?
