Erm... What rock have you been hiding under?
ETIAS has been known about for years. It was supposed to already be in place but as a government IT project it was never going to be finished on time.
I wouldn't count on 2025 either.
This is no different to than the US's ESTA and *shock horror* the UK introduced it's own travel authorisation scheme in 2023.

This is definitely going to happen along with some EU blaming, but as it seems to replace the passport stamping it should really speed up entry. I've had a couple of horrible waits that I'd be keen to avoid in furture.Pincher said:

I vaguely recall it being talked about some while ago but this looks as though it’s confirmation that it’ll be in place for next year?
I agree with Veteran though, despite however much it's publicised it'll still catch Wayne and Waynetta on their yearly trip to Benidorm. Even if the government ran ads during Loose Women.
Also call me cynical but I'd be surprised if it's in by next year, it is an EU project after all.

Wonder if they will delay it again though as some countries say they are not ready.
Slightly different issue, but we already see a huge difference in the level of passport check/stamp checks entering different Shengen countries. Example, Rome airport sent me to the EU queue/e gate and it worked fine (Jan this year). Paris CDG one time very precise, another time (there had been a 1hr system failure and queues were huge at terminal 2K) just stamped without looking at anything. Faro in January, didn't care, stamped in/out without any checks. Barcelona sent to EU queue/e-gate, leaving was just stamp and go. Amsterdam one time long queue check all, another time waved through EU queue with e-gates (that one was 2 years ago though). Very inconsistent.

Last I read it was €21 and lasts for 3 years. It's similar to the American ESTA which is $14 for 2 years.

There's 2 separate things.EES is supposed to be introduced this year - that replaces passport stamping & records every entry/exit, so can enforce the 90/180 day rule.
ETAIS is the pre-authorisation bit which is coming later - mid '25 seems to be the latest estimate.

Our passports were stamped into Cyprus but the guy genuinely didn't look at us once. It was quite funny.
Contrasted with the fairly awful experience at Manchester where they managed to make both my children cry while drug swabbing their hands.
