Audi RS6 (C5) | Spotted

Eight cylinders, 450hp and five-figure mileage for a smidgen over £10k. Where do we sign?

You may have noticed recently that Audi’s changing the way it names its cars. Again. The e-tron electric SUV merged with the Q8 last year because the company’s EV line-up was all over the place, and more recently the German car giant decided that all electrified cars should be even numbers while the odds go to the combustion cars. That means the conventional A4 now becomes the A5, while the recently-revealed A6 will now be powered exclusively by batteries.

Quite what that means for the future of the RS car is something we don’t really know yet. The company clearly isn’t afraid to use the RennSport moniker on its electric cars, with the RS e-tron GT serving as Audi Sport’s de-facto halo car now that the R8 has been resigned to the history books. Recent spy shots of a hot V6 Avant circulating on the internet suggest petrol-powered RS cars aren't off the table, but the likelihood of the V8 wagon returning for what should be the RS7 (formerly the RS6) looks pretty slim. And if it does, who knows if it’ll be anywhere near as boisterous as those that have come before.

See, every generation of RS6 has always been over-engined, whether that be twin-turbocharged V8s with over 600hp or an enormous V10. It’s a formula that the very first RS6, much like the one we have for sale here, set out so brilliantly that it’s been closely adhered to (bar the aforementioned V10-powered C6) ever since. And golly, was it effective. A twin-turbo V8 churning out 450hp is punchy by any standards, but we’re talking about a four-door family saloon with more grunt than the equivalent Porsche 911 Turbo. At the time of launch in mid-2002, it comfortably had the edge on the E39 BMW M5 and W210 Mercedes E55 AMG. The latter would get a leg-up on the RS6 a year later, but only just.

Then there were the hardware improvements. Audi dropped the ride height by 20mm, the dampers were 30 per cent stiffer than the base car’s, and the firm’s Dynamic Ride Control made its debut, which increased damping pressure to counteract pit and roll. It’s a purely mechanical system, too, and while that doesn’t mean it’ll be trouble-free, it’ll surely be less ruinous than the electric systems some of its rivals were using at the time. And have you seen the brakes? Hard to miss ‘em, really, given those 365mm discs up front with eight-piston Brembo calipers to grab onto them.

Changes were kept relatively light inside, with some carbon trim and some very plush-looking Recaro seats being the full extent of it. Not that you need any more. By now you’ve probably spotted the cobra head in the centre console: the RS6 was only ever offered as an auto, sadly, but it’s a near-two-tonne super saloon at the end of the day. And a front-heavy Audi at that. But as Matt Bird found out in a year ago (albeit in the rare Plus model), the original RS6 “tracks like a bullet train, brakes with total composure, and always finds purchase as long as the entry speed isn’t too optimistic.”

It’s aged magnificently, too, perhaps looking a touch restrained in period but that’s worked in its favour in the long run. A huge amount of car for the £11,495 asking price, especially as it’s backed up by a chunky history file including invoices for a recent timing belt and water pump change. You’ll be paying at least double that for an M5, or make that nearly triple for this lovely Silverstone Blue car, and while a W210 E55 AMG can be had for a bit less, it’ll also be 100hp down on the RS6. Question is, can you look past the fact that it’s not an Avant?

Cam asks:

"Question is, can you look past the fact that it’s not an Avant?"

To which the answer is: yes, because we aren't all Josef Fritzl's wannabes.

2 Turbos, 8 pots
Engine's a wonder
Power in corner?
Type of steer: under

Slushy type of gear box
Plushy type of seat box
Wouldn't cost you much dough
Expensive at the pump though

Big and beefy a6
Covers all the basics
Boot to fit a moon?
Nope, it's a saloon

Borderline poetry but you lost me when I fell out of the slushy seats.

Surely this qualifies as a brave pill...? It's a lovely thing in the Red paint and white leathers.

I'd guess so. It's a wonderful thing but the potential for large bills is very real.

Still, think of the noise cloud9

I think I’d rather lose the turbos and get the RS4 V8. Manual, red, blue or possibly black.

But still a great late throw of the ICE dice.

I’m sure in the longer term interesting combustion cars will be pretty desirable.

Audis generally aren't drivers cars in my view, but this is a lovely thing I reckon though. I'd enjoy bombing down the motorway in this I think.

Our local Audi dealer had one in on demo when they first come out (and also the recently released S4). My father and I drove the RS6 first and despite it raining and the roads being covered in leaves, I've never experienced such relentless pull and grip in a car. The conditions made no difference and was left mightily impressed. Drove the S4 afterwards and although it was an impressive car, paled in comparison to the RS6.

I looked at these long and hard when I was looking for a V8 but the potential for ruinous bills put me off. I believe they're very hard on their suspension, plus most things engine-related seemed to involve dropping the engine first (I may be wrong and confusing this with another fast Audi though).

All that said with this much history and at this price it's still a very very tempting offer. They've aged really well and there's something about the subdued looks that just appeal so much more than the more recent offerings.

Lovely car but definitely a bit of a Brave Pill, the possibility of a massive bill is never too far way with these

Ugh everytime I see poetry on this forum I cringe…

What’s not cringeworthy is this RS6 - what a machine. At that price you could rebuild the gearbox and still have something cheaper than an E39 M5. I also like the fact it’s a saloon and not the more common estate.

Every time I took my RS4 to the garage the bill was usually into 4 figures, or occasionally multiples of this. This RS6 has the potential to be even more expensive to run.

Yet, you could buy this for £10k, or even better an RS6 Avant, run it as a daily for 2-3 years setting aside an annual slush fund of £2-3k for things that might go wrong, sell it at the end for probably the same £10k you paid for it, and probably still be quids in at the end over a fairly boggo newer car on PCP.

I've been running one for 3 years as an everyday car and its been great.

Not the cheapest of cars to run - fuel is 20mpg around town up to 28mpg on a run at 70mph on cruise. Build quality pretty good.

Will be selling mine shortly as a fancy a change, but its been fun.

Going back some years a colleague had a C5 2.5tdi which I liked. He passed on a free dealer test drive of a RS6, so i took his place. I remember the , quality, sheer pace and shove that not many cars have matched since.
However it was dull,
I hopped back in my 323i 3 series and realising, apart from the pace how much in nicer in contrast the 3 series was to drive.

Moving on a couple of years a friend had an RS6 avant. He sold it soon into ownership as the cost, fuel, insurance and a service was crippling plus realisation a boot full if loose family paraphernalia flying about everywhere when driving fast isn't fun.

I admire the RS6, but these days I don't want one.

Good cars. In red, the saloon looks nice. In most other colours, I think the Avant looks better.

I remember the RS6 in Gran Turismo (2, I think?), where only the zonda was faster.

Here's one for a few grand less (no idea of history, provenance, etc):

Just accept that you'll have to recon the box, change the timing assembly and replace DRC with regular suspension.
Factor that into the purchase price and off you go.
Though at that point it'll probably double the cost of the car...

Something about that screams "run away!". Maybe the engine light illuminated on the dash... (I am assumimg the airbag light is just because the guy is sitting in the seat without the seatbelt clipped?)

Had one, loved it.. but the gearbox was so fragile.

Mine was a £1600 car... every time I needed something, it seemed to cost around that figure..

Except gearboxes... those were £5k.... and it needed 3 of them..

In the end I stuck with my S8..... a lot less drama and could do everything the RS6 could do, only in more comfort and less cost.
