Hyundai confirms wild N Vision 74 for production

Hyundai's N electric era is off to a hugely auspicious start, and now there's more good news

Though seemingly by accident, Hyundai has confirmed that the incredible N Vision 74 concept is part of its future production plans. Its 2024 CEO Investor Day was intended to outline the ‘Hyundai Way’, how it will expand its hybrid offerings, revolutionise mobility solutions and keep Genesis ticking along - the usual kind of stuff. But performance EVs were also mentioned, and in the slide that detailed the 21 new Hyundai EVs that were coming by 2030, the Vision 74 was clear for all to see. Clearly, the favourable response to the concept and the Ioniq 5 N has helped twist Hyundai’s arm.

No official mention was made of it in the Investor Day press release, though. ‘The N brand will continue to expand its high-performance EVs, allowing the company to further enhance its strong competitiveness in core EV technology’ was as close as it got to confirming future product. But with an Ioniq 6N surely not very far off, something derived from the Vision 74 would make sense to slot in next. Unless there’s an SUV box to tick first. With 2025 looming closer than we’d like, there’s not a huge amount of time - in car-making terms, at least - to launch a new performance model, especially if a production 74 uses bespoke architecture.

As a reminder, the concept running gear used a very heavily modified Kia Stinger as its base, with power coming from a 62.4kWh battery pack and 85kW hydrogen-powered fuel cell, those supplying a pair of 335hp motors, one for each rear wheel. The really clever bit was the creation of a virtual differential using just the software of the motors. The modular E-GMP architecture used for the Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT was deemed unsuitable for a car that needed low-slung proportions. The presentation makes no mention of FCEV tech at all, though in fairness it barely mentions the Vision 74, so probably best not to draw any hard conclusions just yet.

The important news is it will happen, alongside the Genesis Magma models, meaning Hyundai’s exciting performance EV offering is set to become even more so. “In the electrification era, Hyundai has distinguished itself by rapidly launching a comprehensive lineup of EVs, catering not only to mass-market brands but also to the luxury and high-performance segments,” said Hyundai President and CEO Jaehoon Chang. “Building on our advanced technology and dedication to innovation, we aim to secure a leading position in the market as the adoption of electrified vehicles gains momentum.” The Ioniq 5 N has already caused quite the stir without a conventional rival - could the same happen for the Vision 74?

Saw the concept at Goodwood last year, love the looks, hopefully the production car is faithful to the concept. For me this is the first desirable EV. Hypercar stuff that's only for the super rich does nothing for me.

That is a modern day DeLorean if ever. Wonderful thing, but so was the Ioniq 5 when it came out and now it looks so dated.

Looks like something my nipper has created with leftover lego technics parts, fair play to Hyundai as it's knocking out something that isn't a boring EV SUV though! Can't wait to hear what it goes like?

I think this is meant to look dated though, based as it is on their own 1974 Pony Coupe concept:

This car looks like it has come straight out of a Syd Mead concept or maybe out of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game.

If someone had said to me "In 5 years time Hyundai will be one of your favourite car companies", I'd have laughed my bks off.

But here we are...

If it looks like even 70% of the concept I will happily have a bowl of Lithium-ion soup

Hyundai are probably the most innovative, adventurous and on the ball manufacturer around these days. Amazing the progress they've made over the last 25 years....

Without checking that has to have been a Giugiaro design.

Front is giving me giving Lamborghini Marzal vibes, probably the headlamps.

Agree. I'm now in my mind forties and grew up a BMW fan boy, and would've joked about Hyundai. My current car - an i20N

How do you know, or just an assumption?

It'll be low volume (if it remains hydrogen cell powered) and will be a halo product so it won't be cheap. For thes reasons it *could* remain quite faithful to the concept design.

Surely they'd go battery electric though - I can't see them bothering with productionising hydrogen, that really would make it low volume even if they didn't want it to be!

Lets not forget though head of M division did go to Hyundai and created the 130n, the stinger I believe, a philosophy that's filtered to the Iqonic 5N - so there is a link!!

If it was going to be BEV then it'd sit on the chassis of the Ioniq5, EV6, GV70. But its on a modified stinger chassis which won't have the room for the batteries, and the point of the FCEV was probably to get away from the weight of a bit battery pack. With hybrids become more popular maybe it'll be a plug-in series hybrid?
