Now that the Cayman is only round the corner, chances you won't find many under £50k with all the main goodies specced which makes me wonder whether the new model will help 996 to hold their values, specially C4S/TT/GTs?

I can't see the extreme 996's to ever dip below Cayman list and if it does, you'd be daft not to go for the 911.

It will help hold the value of the 996 as being a flagship 911.

people new to porsche will buy one and then want a 911.

not wishing to take anything away from the Cayman of course

It's gonna be interesting..I know 2 current 996 owners who will replace with a Cayman in the next 2 months.

No doubt about it,, with possibly more versions of the Cayman due as well as higher end 997 models in 2006....the current Boxster and 996 values are only going one way,,,prices have already started to adjust...more to come.
No axe to grind as I have done my water cooled Porsche ownership.

you think? I think people new to Porsche who buy a Cayman will probably buy a hotter cayman(turbo?)

I imagine they will probably attract a different market or maybe even the other way around 911 buyers may go hot Cayman.

I don't see Porsche making a hotter cayman than the S unless they want to kill the 911 stone dead, or intend to make the base 911 have 450bhp.

Frankly I salute their audacity for selling a coupe for more than the convertible!

I'm praying they don't make a cayman CS or my RS residual projections may be wildly out!

The Cayman is certainly going to muddy the waters in terms of used 996 prices.

Let's say in 2 years time: Cayman RS - £62k with smidgen more bhp and 50kg less weight VS 996 GT2 £60k with 480bhp. (plus it's done it's depreciation) There's simply no contest what I would go for and it aint the croc.

Interesting point is you have a 996 Gt2 at 60k in 2 years time....I wonder if they are on the way up by then?

What's even more intriguing is how the GT3 RS, TT S and GT3 MK1 & MK2 will be in 2 years time. There's a lot of bargains to be had then.

I don't see they cayman S affecting GT3 prices. If people are wanting a cayman over a GT3, the GT3 was the wrong car for them in the first place. Might affect a few 997 sales though for people who couldn't really justify the 997s premium to themselves, not that the gap is really that wide.

I think people will see the Cayman as a Boxster tier car, not a 911 one, and to a lot of people that matters.

Quite agree. Porsche add 20 horses and a roof and in contradiction of their 911 pricing model set about charge nearly £10K more for it !!! You can buy a lot of car for just 10K anyway. Boxster S remains the best "value" car in the Porsche range IMHO.

The boxster has this "poor mans porsche" tag that seems to have stuck, perhaps the thinking in making it more expensive than the Boxster was that porsche did not want the Cayman getting this tag?

I do think though that at over £50k loaded the Cayman S is too expensive.

I may be wrong, but I think the cayman will have the same poor man's porsche label, that will be defended in an over agressive fashion by defensive owners Bit like the poxster

The Cayman will have the same effect on 996 residuals as the Boxster did on 996 Cab prices.

the Boxster has an image problem to some simply because it is a soft top and people equate that drivers who pose rather than drive

which is a shame as £ for £ it is a better car than a 911 (flame suit on but I had a 986 and am know buying a 996 so no particular allegiance)

the Cayman will succeed because it is basically a Boxster w/o that stigma (and with a tokedn bhp increase to add credence).

Once the cayman reviews come out and it starts to beat or equals a base 997 I think it will hit residuals

In the same way I am thinking shoud I go for a 996TT or a brand-new, my-spec, improved 997 C2S and sacrifice the extra oomph?
People will think shall I get a brand new Cayman or a second hand 997 whcih is fractionally quicker.

Boxsters got good reviews too, so don't see that that has to do with it. The boxster was labelled a poor man's porsche because its was cheaper, and a lot of the buyers weren't buying it for its fabulous dynamics, but because they liked plonking the Porsche keyring down on the bar.

because IMHO at the moment all the Cayman press is marketing guff, once Evo and the like start declaring "quicker and better handling than a 911" all across the cover people will adjust their preconceptions that the 911 is king and there are no alternatives.

Boxster was never comapred directly with 911 as different price point, car type (convertible) and performance step

If thats what happens, Porsche have just scored an enormous own goal and blown away the non 'S' 911s whilst probably tarring the whole range with that brush which will piss off people who plumped up extra for a higher end version.

Time will tell I guess.

I think the Cayman will certainly have an effect on the 911.

I own a 3.4 996 and the Cayman S is in direct competition with it. Same engine size, almost the same figures 0-60, BHP etc. And it will probably handle better. So why wouldn't someone want to buy a new Porsche with full warranty and no worries compared to an ageing car that isn't as good.

I don't think they will want to impose on the latest 911 models and therefore the S will, i would imagine be the top model. I think the reason the Cayman S is 295bhp as opposed to the 3.4 996's 300bhp is an attempt at not encroching into 911 territory, but it is.

That is the reason why I've just sold my 3.4 911(boo-hoo)

DanH,
According to Porsche the Cayman is more than just a Boxster with fixed roof. Boxsters owners are bound to try to justify there purchase of the Boxster and claim it isn't, but most reviews are saying the performance of the Cayman is a couple of notches above the Boxster S.
We'll see when they go head to head in various car mags in the next few months.
