There will certainly be a framing-tool to align the badge, so definitely a conscious decision. Probably a change in market volumes (to LHD or to RHD) so the decision will be to make the most visible position for the majority market. Could it be due to the number of steps (perhaps literally!) getting the badge from the back of the lorry to the boot? Perhaps Toyota/Citroen/Peugeot found that switching from one side to the other saved a movement or two based on something as silly as what side of the factory it came in on?

I thought this, happened to a colleagues car, they put the 1.9TID badge on the left hand side of his Saab 9-3 boot weirdlyI was wondering a while back... if you buy a used car that was originally specced as debadged from the factory, but you want the badge and take it to a body shop to be done, how accurately will it be located? I guess if you takle it to a manufacturer approved repairer they'll have a means of locating it in exactly the right place. Right?

I have seen on this website before a drawing from BMW; someone had quoted a car for sale and someone replied saying it has potentially had rear end damage as the badge has been replaced as it is in the wrong location, see attached image.I did, only this week, have a video suggested on YouTube of a guy installing badges on a new Audi SUV on a production line, he had a massive jig that looked to cover nearly the whole rear of the car with the correctly sized spaces to install the badges!
The production line will have templates that datum off the edge of the panel to ensure the badges go in the right place.
I used to have to get A4 sheets of fridge magnet type stuff and get templates made for badges fitted at port.
ETA, Design decide where they go, and it isn’t uncommon for them to change position at minor model changes.

The Ford Puma seems to have the badge sometimes on the bonnet & sometimes on the grille.
The facelift has moved the badge from the bonnet to the grille. The Ford Puma seems to have the badge sometimes on the bonnet & sometimes on the grille.

In the '80s I was a car cleaner at a Datsun main dealer and there were two of us.
We had a "secret" system. After we'd prepared the vehicles the last job was to apply the dealer sticker to the rear window. My stickers always went to the top & my mates to the bottom. This way we always knew who's car was who's.
Mind, one day when we were racing my mate reversed a PX Merc out of our bay forgetting to shut the rear doors. They smashed into the front doors before they fell off. He tried to put his sticker at the top

Yeah, for someone as anal about details as myself this kind of thing really bothers me. I cringe seeing a new car debadged to be PPF’d or wrapped etc. … unless the badges went back on in exactly the same place it would drive me crazy. Problem is though, I’ve been to a few factories and they all use a massive template that covers most of the rear of the car - anywhere else just isn’t going to have something as good.
I did once apply a replacement badge to a car of my dad’s and was happy with the result. It was an Elise S and the S had been caught under the edge with a cloth and snapped. I laid some putty stuff over the existing Elise and half-S to make a key for the new S and then applied it that way. Worked perfectly but wouldn’t have helped if the entire badge needed replacement.
Edit - as for those Aygos, who knows! We had a couple of those at work but I’ve no idea where the badges were. Have Aygo Xs now and no clue on those either.
My bet would be one of them has had a replacement glass and someone very much not equipped with the correct template fitted the badge to the wrong side. Although perhaps not as both have the same white stickers.
