Just back from a long holiday, so this may well have been covered.
Looking at going electric from Q2 next year and haven't had a chance to dissect the full list of rumors circulating about tax changes.
Is anything being mooted for VED?

I reckon it could go one of two ways. Up or up.

Certain to rise, Rachel Thieves wants every pound she can steal!

And the nasty Tories have already told us that EV's will have to pay from April '25!

Should be based on Weight.

I can't help but think the BIK will be increased substantially on electric cars in the higher price brackets.

And smugness. IC cars are taxed by kg/CO2, EVs should be taxed by Smugness, 1-10.

Absolutely, the scale should be 1 for a Dacia Spring, 3 for an MG, 5 for a Kia/Hyundai, 6 for the VW ID, 7 for a Tesla, 8 for an Audi E Tron/Mercedes EQ/BMW ixdrive40 sport, 9 for a Porsche Taycan and 10 for when Range Rover release a full EV

2nd year tax onwards is the same flat rate for all IC cars from 2017, only the first year tax that the dealer pays to put it on the road is based on emissions

Plus £500 PA for anything over £40k for 5 years. Which let's be honest, is a Golf GTI or well specced Mini these days.

Indeed, It's £410 though, but still a money grabbing rip off for what are a pretty average cars in 2024

I wouldn’t put it past them to abolish the 2017 ruling..

Partly the reason I bought a 7 year old weekend car with £190 ved as opposed to a newer one with £600.

Let's face it, the VED system is a complete nonsense - time to throw it away and start again with a different system IMHO. Given that congestion is so rife, perhaps by length, like boats, or length x weight because that's what breaks up roads.

I agree but would require consultations, tears and anguiish. So outside the scope of a budget.

Based on no evidence at all, I suspect roads are broken up by length x weight/tyre contact patch. We'd need many more weighbridges. The public could then look to reduce their liability by using a multi-fuel stop strategy, carefully measuring washer fluid, never carrying passengers and squeezing the biggest possible tyres onto a Mk1 Elise. It would really focus the national consciousness....

Width is probably a bigger factor in congestion, particularly on narrower roads. I'd be happy for ved to be calculated on width.

Certainly a 'Bloated SUV' surcharge would be a good idea... perhaps it might steer people back to normal cars...!
