Any recommendations? We're going for a week in October, and I'm tempted by Hertz. Looking for a small hatchback ('coz narrow roads).

I was there this summer. And did the usual tedious searching for a reputable hire car firm.

Seems that the big firms, like Enterprise and Hertz, are franchise in Montenegro and excess / damage charges post return were not uncommon. Other reviews suggested using local firms. I used https://www.terraecar.com/

Completely painless, paid a deposit prior to arrival, the rest at the airport (I flew into Podgorica). I had a fairly leggy Skoda CityGo which was clean but had seen some action - on return they didn't even look around it.

Driving in Montenegro is an experience. Its a tiny country - the roads are either amazing billiard smooth tarmac or not quite finished yet and that can change multiple times on the same stretch of road. Everyone seems to travel at warp speed, but look at the speedo and you'll be lucky to see 50kph - take that into account when working out how long it takes to get somewhere.

How odd. I went there a couple of times bitd when it was opening up for tourism and I didn't realise until today how small a country it was. Small place, big scenery smile

Update:
I used terraecar.com, paid the extra insurance and it worked perfectly. The car was as requested (Yaris auto, which I drive at home*, but mine's slightly less battered) and they didn't even look at the car when I returned it.

*Renting the car you drive daily means being able to concentrate on avoiding the homicidal local drivers. Having said that, they weren't as bad as I'd been told.

When i was looking to go there, and started doing research it is worth checking what the cross border policies are as they did vary in cost and being such a small country if you did want to go into Croatia (Dubrovnik daytrip for example), Bosnia or Albania then they may vary.

We had checked also how that changed if you flew into Dubrovnik and transited over as thats another route in some of the holiday operators take.
