Sold car, buyer took green slip. DVLA website didn't recognise number from V5, so advised by DVLA to write to them giving all information on date of sale, new owner's address etc. I have sent this letter but DVLA say processing that info may take up to 4 weeks. I no longer own the car nor have any access to it whatsoever. Until DVLA update their record, who is the registered keeper?
Thanks

I've just been through this, if they have taxed the car using the green slip then it is put in their name and your v5 is now invalid as a new one is on it's way to the new owner. Gave me a bit of worry till I got the confirmation letter from dvla.

West Yorkshire Police Website: "The registered keeper should be the person who is actually using / keeping the vehicle and this is not necessarily the owner of the vehicle or the person who is paying for it."

I no longer either use nor keep the vehicle.

As mentioned, you.

But, were you trying to register it online with the number from the Green Slip as this is the wrong one. You want to use the one on the front of the V5 (amongst other places). This also means that the new owners haven't taxed it then?

The only part of the form we had was part 10 (green slip), 11 and 12. That's why the DVLA asked me to write to them with the info.

According the Police definition quoted above, I'm not the registered keeper

You may have done it the wrong way around, new owner gets the green slip and you keep the front page.

That quote is explaining who the registered keeper should be updated to, not that it automatically changes.

The quote defines what registered owner means in the eyes of the law. I'm not the registered owner if have no access to the car whatsoever

That really isn’t the case. The registered keeper is whoever is the registered keeper with the DVLA. That quote is giving guidance on it. Note the words “should be” rather than “is”.

Keep proof of the sale so if anything does arise you can successfully prove you weren’t driving.

It was your responsibility to inform the DVLA of the transfer of keeper at the time of sale. It is done online and only takes a minute to do this. I’m not sure why the DVLA site didn’t recognise the V5 number though. Did you get the buyer to sign a sales receipt? Might come in handy if you need to prove you are no longer the owner/keeper.

Seems to me that the OP never had the full V5c for the car. Or it was a very old one. There are only 6 sections to the V5c and have been for years.

If you remove the first digit from the reference no on the new keeper slip, you have the 11 digits necessary to do change of keeper online. But f it's not the current V5c, as said above, the new keeper can't buy VED for it either. You can check here to see if it's taxed:

Nope, you can tax a car on a green slip when it's still in the trade and they don't register it to you. Rumour has it you can do this for years and years wink

You can also tax the car via DD in one name and it doesn't change the registration at all. Why should the person paying to tax a car have any bearing on the registered keeper?

Your buyer went and registered the car to themselves online using the reference number on the V5 I imagine.
