Whilst fiddling with the wife's BMW X2 I have come across this strange box in the engine bay, apparently stuck onto a frame bar.

It has no BMW markings whatsoever.....
The QR code is fake......
It's getting power......

Any ideas? Have MI5 finally caught up with me?

Cheers!

First owner, or second hand financed? Where do the power leads go back to?

Aftermarket exhaust valve controller ?

With a fake QR code, it'd be more Alibaba than Dahler.

It's also technically not even a QR code, it's another type of 2d barcode (looks like Data Matrix) which your normal scanner app won't read.

It only encodes a small amount of data though, probably just a serial number, so even if you did scan it I doubt it will tell you much

My guess is a box for simulating a button press to disable stop/start or something.

We bought it second hand last year....it's not on finance.....

It's a diesel X2 so no exhaust controller.....sadly I can't easily see where the wires go back to!

Any other ideas appreciated!

It’s just the junction box for the bonnet release cable. Many cars have them, presumably to make the assembly line easier as the release handle can be preassembled with dash trim and the release mechanism pre assembled with the front end module. The two ends are then joined together in an accessible place under the bonnet.

Thank you all!!! Really appreciated.

I did think the wires looked fairly substantial.

Cheers!
