I used to have a credit card, mainly for car hire but it expired a couple of years ago, not really sure why they didn't send me a new one.

I recently looked at my credit score via a banking app and it was good recommended I took out a credit card.

Hoe do they know I have a credit card and using it?

Credit card is a form of borrowing and your (re)payment record is recorded on credit files.

There are three major credit referencing agencies - Equifax, Experian and Transunion. Virtually all financial firms will both look you up against those agencies, and report data back to them about the credit their customers have. This includes mortage providers, loans, credit card firms, telecoms, cable/satellite TV, banks that you have an arranged overdraft with, and so on. Almost anything where a service or financial facility is provided up front and paid for later, including buying a sofa on tick at DFS, 'buy now pay later' in stores, Klarna/PayPal Credit etc.

So yes, they know exactly what you have...
