Nissan confirms 435hp, 442lb ft for NISMO Ariya

'Greater turning and lateral forces than the GT-R NISMO', too

It’s World EV Day today - don’t pretend like you didn’t know already. To mark the occasion, Nissan has confirmed a few additional specs of its Ariya NISMO, the car that will mark the return of the storied nameplate to Europe. With the Z remaining frustratingly out of reach, so it rests on the EV SUV to pick up where the GT-R left off. Yikes.

The 435hp we knew about, with a pair of electric motors and 87kWh battery. Now Nissan has announced that the Ariya NISMO will also boast 442lb ft, and the ability to hit 62mph in five seconds. All par for the course, really, as far as electric 4x4s are concerned; where the Nissan should get a little more interesting is in the ‘motorsport-inspired upgrades’ for an ‘even more exhilarating driving experience’.

So there are 20-inch Enkei wheels that are cast aluminium but promise comparable strength to weight as a forged rim, Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres and retuned steering for increased feel. Additionally, the suspension is completely overhauled from a regular Ariya, with a complete rethink of springs, dampers and anti-roll  bars for ‘enhanced balance and body control’.

The revised e-4ORCE four-wheel drive could be where the magic really lies, however - Nissan has some history with fancy four-wheel drive, after all. Nominally its power split is 60:40 in favour of the rear, but the power sent to each wheel can be adjusted 10,000 times a second. Nissan says the NISMO improves on the standard Ariya’s ‘line-racing performance’ by 12 per cent; more excitingly, it says that the new version of the e-4ORCE takes knowledge from the GT-R’s old ATTESA system to achieve ‘greater turning and lateral forces’ than the old NISMO. Which would be some feat given how the old R35 cornered and gripped.

Extra updates from standard include a NISMO drive mode and an ‘i-Booster’, which increases braking performance with regen changes. Presumably it’s a more aggressive setting for one pedal driving, if perhaps not as extreme as the Ioniq 5 N’s N Pedal. But let’s see - nobody quite knows what to expect at the moment when it.

At launch, the Ariya NISMO will only be available in the Stealth Grey paint seen here with red accents. Sales are set to begin in January, though really keen customers will be able to get priority access later in the month. At which point we should know prices; given the most expensive Ariya is currently the £59,025 Evolve, something priced against the £65k Hyundai would seem about right.

I was driving behind a NISMO Juke yesterday funnily enough. So I'm sure this will do well too. For me personally I'd rather have a 370Z NISMO, or a R35 GT-R NISMO though.

Not great family cars though those Lee, this is more akin to your Merc family bus.

And as for "Nobody asked for and nobody wants"

8 Billion folk in this world, I personally dont feel qualified to speak on all their behalves, not something I fancy but I can only categorically comment on my own opinion of it, it looks alright for the usual medium crossover type thing but my kids are grown up, dont need one, had a Galaxy when they were young, suspect it would do a similar job to that.

I fixed that for you....A Nismo 370Z blasted past me the other day. It did sound pretty ace.

0-60 of 5 seconds sounds slow for a car with 435 HP, must weigh a lot and £65k there must be better options than this at that price.

"Normally power is split 40:60 front to rear" - a fact literally nobody cares about. It's a Nissan SUV, thing. 70 grand on a Qashqai. Oh what a day.

That's a positive thing keeping the NISMO brand going..
Around £60k for a well set up EV is pretty good value too..
I bet Mat from Carwow can't wait to drag test it smile

I actually think the standard one is pretty good-looking! The first time I saw one in a car park it made me wander over to check it out. The car itself also seems pretty well-reviewed as is. I do agree though, I'm not sure who wanted this version.

biggrin

The 370's(and 350's) do sound ace with a little tweak to the exhaust for sure. thumbup

I hadn't seen a NISMO Juke for ages until yesterday to be fair. It was a 2010 plate, and it looked in really good nick I thought. I've never personally been a huge fan of the Juke, but plenty of folk do seem to like them though I reckon.

The standard car weighs just over 2200kg...so heavy then?! biggrin

I get sick of moaning about the weight of modern cars to be honest, and EVs have only compounded things in that regard too I reckon.

Looks st and is likely to cost a small fortune, relatively speaking. If it had an Audi badge they'd sell like hot cakes.

Another legendary racing name succumbs to SUVitis. In the desperation to defy physics, Nismo is now an SUV badge. How sad.

Not sure about this.

My wife has a normal Ariya and it's a lovely thing for wafting around with children in the back etc.

It's quite a wallowly thing and certainly doesn't beg to be hustled along so not sure it needs significantly more power!

I kinda like the Nismo Juke. It's basically just a slightly lifted Clio RS, after all, and that's hardly a bad combination if like me your driving takes you down rutted farm tracks a lot. In black I even quite like how they look paperbag Don't worry, my membership card is already in the post back to PH Towers.

With that said, this Nismo Areola thing is a bridge too far even for me.
