Well, it's been a poor summer, I'm sure it will now be a poor winter too.

Snow has settled on Cairngorm.

Oh hell yeah. I am here once again hoping for snow, despite often struggling to stand upright on regular, grippy surfaces.

I currently have no traction control on the car so at least a foot of snow by Sunday lunchtime across the entire UK yes

Is this the earliest compared to the last few years?

Perfect timing for the winter thread as the forecast for the next two weeks is +20 degrees from next Monday here in NE Suffolk.

Jumper went in yesterday. Temps seem to have dropped massively large couple of days.

Welcome everyone, I pray we all are looking forward to a good winter of snow rain and misery?

Fleece went on this morning, and it’s works sports day tomorrow. Ideal timing!

In for the mildly damp and occasionally windy grey winter thread.

Does this thread get locked if the snow melts over the weekend?

Or do we think the snow that has now fallen is there until after the winter?

Feels like a bit of an overreaction to open this thread because an unlikely weather pattern for the time of year (see MetOffice Weather Deepdive on Youtube) has taken place this week.

Saw the comments on the "summer" thread earlier on, and went and had a nosey at the Cairngorms webcams....

If the animal kingdom is programmed to know if we are going to have a bad winter, the fact that a couple of squirrels are constantly burying their nuts in my garden suggests a chilly one. Don't get me wrong this happens every year but it seems earlier this year and they seem extra busy this year.

I'm always a happy chap when this thread is launched.... woohoo

I'm hoping for a long, dark and bitterly cold winter, with some crisp freezing days thrown in as I love that sort of weather (can't stand temps of more than 20c).

It probably be crap with mild weather and drizzle though.

First day of the season where I switched on my heated seats.
Be careful out there.

Wasn't it over 30 degrees this time last year?

Certainly chilly these last few days but I'll take it if it means we see a bit more of the sun.
