Hi all,

I currently have a 2006 Impreza, 2010 Ceed Estate and 2012 i40 Estate premium edition.

The Impreza is a weekend toy so I need something cheap to run as a daily, so the Ceed has been the car, and a brilliant car it has been. However, I wanted a bit more luxury, so now have the Hyundai i40 Estate diesel premium edition as well as still owning the Ceed for the moment. The i40 is a lovely place to be, fully loaded and smooth as silk, I really like it. The problem is fuel consumption though, book says about 50 to 55mpg daily driving, but it only just manages 34mpg at best on mixed driving where the Ceed gets 50-55mpg easily on the same roads, so it kind of defeats the object as a second car.

So I need an alternative, I would like an estate car, has to be capable of 45mpg mixed driving and have a touch of luxury on a budget of 6k. The i40 has under 100,000 miles on it, so would like something with less than 100,000 on the clock.

I don't suffer with badge snobbery, however, I don't fancy a Jaguar, other than that, I am pretty open to ideas...

Not sure if there's any wiggle room with the price, First thing that came to mind with comfort is Volvo,

A bit over, but a 2.0D V70,

Also a Skoda Superb Estate looks a lovely place to be

Both should be able to do that MPG

I do have some wiggle room for the right car, the Volvo is a nice idea but the Superb does look quite luxurious and elegant, I like that.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think an Octavia estate in the right spec could be nice too. My dad has a Yeti with the black leather, it really is very comfy.

Thanks for the replies once again. I do like the idea of some of these, plenty of options I haven't considered.

With regard to comfort and 'luxury' we've had the Skoda Superb and whilst on paper it's amazing, on the motorway and living with it we were so disappointed.

The refinement, ICE, engine noise, cabin, plastics, are all very much lower rent.

The V70 would be my choice. We run a V40 Inscription and it's so comfortable. Not the quietist on a run but then you are moving into luxo barge territory.

Have you thought about a Lexus?
The Jag XF's seem to be well priced.

It's a 'thumbs down' for a Skoda from our experience.

Thanks for the heads up on the sofa, useful to know. As for the Lexus, they seem to be heading into the older cars on my budget, as far as I can see that is, so kind of dismissed them.

Have you investigated this at all? I've seen plenty of cars with dicky thermostats & temperature sensors that cause the engine to take far longer to warm up or stay in a warm up state using more fuel.

As for replacement, the Skoda Superb checks the >45mpg an luxury boxes.

Cost and risk of change is not worth an extra 10 mpg

I'd go for the Skoda Superb personally, always found them a very nice place to be for wafting along.

Wouldn't touch a Volvo at that age after owning a 60 plate V60, I had a silly amount of electrical issues that cost me a small fortune over the 18 months I owned it, including every door lock failing failing one after the other which had to be replaced and the BLIS system failing whenever it rained.

Well, I have done some independent checking on owners actual averages and they do seem to range from 34 to 45mpg, which kind of fits. However, I do seem to have a temp control issue, I think it may be linked to a small radiator leak, but now you mention it, it could well be thermostat related. I will be investigating this further and it may help, I will have to see.

Thanks for the advice on this one.

I’d get your i40 brakes and tyres checked if it’s diesel powered and only delivering 34 mpg.

There are lots of ways for a diesel to get down to 34mpg.
For starters, what kind of journeys?

My previous diesel shed, I averaged about 45mpg over the whole time I owned it.
But commuting in bad traffic could easily knock off 10 mpg.
Lazy steady cruising on quiet motorways could easily add 10mpg.

Secondly, driving style. Angry person always looking, but failing, to overtake, can knock off more than 10 mpg.

Thirdly, there could be stuff wrong with the car.

Fourthly, 'going very fast' is rarely cheap.

A lot of truth in this.

Work out the actual cost in a year for the different mpg and the cost of buying a lemon, or the cost of running an extra car.

Or better still, just say you fancy a new car instead of all the convoluted clap trap that comes with most of the car buying threads!

If he drives it and the Ceed in a similar fashion, then the 20mpg gap suggests an issue.

Does it have a coolant temperature gauge?

When I had a 320Td the fuel economy plummeted when either the main or EGR thermostat was shot and the coolant would not get up to temperature.

Yes it does have a digital temp gauge and there has been some odd activity, sitting at a normal position then shooting up then dropping back down under where normal would be, all in the space of minutes with no change in driving conditions. Now I did put this down to a radiator leak, I got this sorted and as far as I was aware there have been no issues with it over the past 6 months.

To fill in some gaps, I picked the car up for my dad to use while back in the country, he had it for 6 months and isn't mechanically minded, so he may well have not noticed anything. When I got it back, I drove it 30miles and it began to overheat, so I pulled up to check things and the coolant was pretty much all gone, seemed the radiator was leaking once again.

I topped it up to full and the temp gauge is fine, the car drives fine, but it still smells hot to me. I may be paranoid, but I have learned not to ignore some of those paranoid feelings when it comes to cars. The car is going back in for diagnostics, but I am interested in the thoughts of others here.

Yes, this could impact MPG, but even when running fine, it was still poor.

To answer some of the above, no, I don't drive like my hair is on fire, the brakes and tyres are fine, although, not sure what the brakes will do to impact fuel economy, I try my best just not to use them but while keeping in mind not to drive like a lunatic lol!
