Another Lane Hogs Thread... Mindset Question

Drivers hogging lanes, especially the outside one: what is going on in their head?
Most seem to think it's the fast lane and therefore, they will get to their destination quicker by sticking to it. But it's more than that. I think it's a mental illness. They could be doing 60/65mph, with no cars to their near-side, but will not budge. They defiantly hold their position forcing those behind to either form a queue, or, rightly or wrongly, undertake them. I just cant work these balloonheads out. What goes through their minds? It could be an empty motorway and there they are in their own blissful world (pissing other drivers off).
There are more and more of them.
It's about time Public Information Service announcements were aimed at these numbskulls? What's the bleedin' point of speed vans trying to catch those breaking the limits when it has been made clear how hogging a lane is an offence. KEEP LEFT UNLESS YOU ARE OVERTAKING.
I'm convinced that the only reason there aren't more RTAs is because good drivers can predict what these f
kers will do before they even know themselves.

Today, motorway slip road with two lanes, split by diagonal hatching, I’m in the inside lane.
Bloke is catching me in the outside lane and joins the motorway, then immediately draws alongside me as my lane merges, then matches my speed.
Nothing in the second lane, no response to my indicator, he just sits there, blocking my manoeuvre with his ineptitude and lack of critical thinking.
I suppose he did keep to the inside lane though…

Bloke is catching me in the outside lane and joins the motorway, then immediately draws alongside me as my lane merges, then matches my speed.

Yep, see today for an example.Travelling Southbound on the M6 around Stoke area, overtaking in Lane 3 and spot an unmarked XC60 charging up with blue lights going, so i speed up a bit to get past car i was slowly overtaking, then moved over so as not to impede their progress and i spotted a car in left hand lane drifting towards the bit of road i was about to occupy and was already mentally preparing when the women driving just drifted right without looking. Cue me standing on the brakes hard to avoid the inevitable accident.
Did i beep the horn?
Nope
Did i rant and rave at her?
Nope
No point in either, i avoided the accident and i think she was so mortified she hadn't seen me - Mazda Cx-60 so not small - she had punished herself enough but she had zero idea i was even there.
Happens to me pretty much every day. We have a bypass around our village with about a mile between traffic islands. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve followed drivers who stay in the outside lane because they’re turning right at the next island irrespective how far away that next island is….

So I did once have a glimpse into the lane hogger's mindset. I work in a tech company in the automotive sector, and the company decided to send us on four days driver training with CAT at Millbrook, which we did in pairs. So I was in the back with my colleague - an intelligent thirtysomething guy - driving, and the instructor in the passenger seat.
Anyway we were doing pretty much exactly 70mph in the outside lane of three on the M1, and there was an Audi behind obviously wanting to drive faster. I think there was some traffic in the middle lane, but there were also sufficient gaps that we could have pulled over without really being delayed.
The instructor made some gentle comment to draw my colleague's attention to the driver behind's desire to pass, to which his response was "I'm doing the speed limit, that's his problem".

You shouldn’t let yourself get into that situation. You should have accelerated on the slip lane to match his speed when you noticed him catching up with you, or moved into the outside lane.Today, motorway slip road with two lanes, split by diagonal hatching, I’m in the inside lane.
