Go and see " the Pinnacles" which is about 3 hours drive north. Wave rock is also interesting but the flies there are a real pest and swarm around when you get out of the car...........I could see why the aussies have corks around their hats then
However the west coast of Australia is very sparceley populated and theres not a lot to see ( IMHO) and what there is have many hours of driving in-between.
I couldn't believe it when, in a bid to attract the tourist dollar one town ( one street more a hamlet)was advertising itself as the home of the worlds biggest dog cemetery and the next town held the world championships of the " Most dogs in a ute" competition..........
Cheers,
Tony

Freemantle is worth a visit,it is where the first settlers to WA landed and is probably the oldest colonial area near Perth with old markets selling exotic fruit, colonial buildings and a giant chess set that makes for a good photograph.
Ive done WA a few times once was a trip from Adelaide across the Nulaboor plain, some 1,300 miles in distance which makes Perth the most cut off city in the world,i would say with its sandy terrain and plants it would compare with Texas.
If you have wheels must travel then try to get to Monkey Mia where you can swim with the Dolphins,i also found the surrounding beeches of Perth were fantastic with the hot white sand although take some proper sandals as you can burn the soles of your feet.
If you need some where to stay there are plenty of hotels although on a couple of occasions i stayed at "Backpackers" accomodation and i think it was around the equivilant of as fiver a night then(90's).
You will love it.

Thanks for all the good advice... we where thinking of renting a house on one of the beaches for a week or so to really chill out, any reccommnedations for the seaside bit? Obviously we will have a car and be able to get about.
For seaside get yourself upto Broome (2 hr internal flight from Perth) - cable beach is just awsome...
There's lots of rentable accomodation, Matsos is a cracking restaurant, as is Zoo Cafe.
Also check out the crocodile park - awesome.
I'd recommend you get a 4x4 and explore the Kimberley and the surrounding areas.
As has also been said, Freemantle is very nice.

The park is called King's Park and is brilliant love the BBQ with a gas meter which you feed with cash and then BBQ away to your hearts content!
Part of Cottesloe beach is a nudist beach....I only know this as I walked onto it by mistake from further down the beach and it took a couple of seconds to register all of the people on the beach were without costumes

Freemantle is a great place to visit as is Bunbury down the coast from Perth.
I haven't been there since 1994 but really should go back as most of my family live there

One of the memories from the last time I went (1987) was that we visited the Pinnacles and mother had hired a white Mitsubishi Colt which turned orange from the bottom up driving on the un-metalled roads! (Very orange sand!)
Yallingup Caves down at Margaret River were good, but that was around 25 years ago! Nice beaches as well (from a childs point of view)
Oh - and the Quokka's on Rottnest are very sweet.

Scarborough Beach is a beaut - the Rendez Vous Hotel (nooiiice) is right on the beach and the view from the sea-facing rooms is lovely.
Kings Park is also worth a stroll, and not just for the pay-as-you-go barbies
Freemantle is a must if only for the Little Creatures Brewery - probably the best beer in Oz. Also the old jail is worth a visit as the tour gives the history of how the area started.
I've got a few names of places, hostels mainly, we've stayed in Perth, I'll see if I can dig them out.
