My grandson is helping me build a patio before I'm too old to finish the last few jobs round the house and garden.

"You've made it," he said, catching me off guard.

Being told I'd made it by one of my peers would be nice but unlikely, going by my semi-detached house and elderly cars. Still, he volunteered it, I'll have that.

"Oh, yes, what makes you say that?"
"You've got an outside plug."

I always thought having the heating on whenever you want no matter what time of year, without being concerned about the cost, is the very definition of having made it. biggrin

I'd imagine this is possible for quite a few financially, but not mentally, which I suppose is, "having made it", in that, you have the freedom of not worrying about being poor no matter your wealth.

Our house has been a total restoration project since we moved in. Our kids were 1 and 2.5 at the time so they’ve known no difference.

We’ve got a lovely neighbour who lives in a much grander house nearby and called there to drop some treats to her. Whilst chatting at the doorstep she closed the inner door so the dog wouldn’t escape. My then 5 year old exclaims ‘Wow.. This house is fancy! You even have doors downstairs!’

Always feel like I made it, council kid, now married, house in the sticks, cars on the drive and observatory in the garden, plenty of space (not always time) for hobbies and family around me. Lifes good ya know!

Years ago I overheard my elderly next door neighbour gossiping to another old dear on the road that I must be on footballers wages with my new car. The car in question was a 14 year old MX5 I'd picked up for £700.... but being a convertible it was obviously flash in her eyes.

Just imagine what she would say if you bought a Jaguar X-Type.

Someone across the road from my primary school had a double ended driveway. At the age of 6, that was the epitome of success for me because it meant they didn't have to reverse on their drive.
By that metric, I'm a failure.

Success is made up of 2 things. Contentment, and security. The latter, of course, has a financial element, but that's as far as money has a relationship with success.

If you're content, and secure, than well done. You're a success.

Probably not, as the house is worth £375k and as we know that wont buy a parking space in that London

When I was a kid, my Grandad bought a house with a remote controlled electrically operated garage door, I couldn't fathom how it could possibly open on it's own, I thought he was James Bond.

We joked that we'd made it when we had a big enough kitchen to have an Island in.

Still no downstairs toilet though frown

That reminds me of something I saw about 30 years ago.

On the way back home from work I used to pass this modern estate (mostly big 4 and 5 bed houses). As I was driving past I noticed a couple had both arrives simultaneously at home, both in sports cars (IIRC one was a Z4, I couldn't identify the other), both driving up to a double garage with 2 electric doors opening at the same time.

To me in my 10 year old Corolla I thought it looked pretty impressive biggrin
