Bit worried...

Actual VMAX for the Mog was 135mph. Respectable but well down on the test figures form the factory and other sources. Stock car should crack 160mph, and certainly 155 no problem on a day like Sunday.

Car is goin in to be looked at, but seeing as it pulls like a train to 100mph, then runs out of puff I'm at a loss to determine what the isse could be.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I've spoken to DMS who were very helpful (Mike put me in touch with a friend who races and Aero who confirmed that a stock Mk 1 like mine should eat 150 for breakfast).

Sounds like they've got some useful options to tune the car, but I want to make sure it's totally right before I start mucking about.,...

Be worried, my dad's '96 Aston V8 Coupe did 148 a few moons ago. Something isn't right, obviously.

Sorry, that wasn't helpful. Hope you get it sorted. It's a fine car.

Have you checked to see if you're getting full throttle when the pedal is all the way to the floor?

Is it 'cos of all the tyre scrub because poor Clarence doesn't know which direction to go in? Lord knows how it felt looking down a straight runway.

Hope you get it sorted: perhaps a post on the Morgan forum might elicit some suggestions.

Certainly seemed to pull well... had plenty of torque, although there was some dubious drifting going on ooooh....

Seriously though, as Ed says, check the full pedal travel equates to full throttle on the cable.

When was it last serviced..? Does the air filter need changing..?

Does seem odd though mate... certainly felt more than 135...

Oh, and YHM.

Right. Just spoke to the factory and this (suprisingly) sounds like it's more or less right. Highest recorded speed from a stock mark I is 155mph on a banked oval, and I think they said that took a few laps to achieve, so 140ish on the flat over a 2 mile distance is probably around about right suprisingly enough.

On the plus side I've just been given chapter and verse on the tuning possiblities. This could be rather fun, seems theres an extra 50bhp easily available with air filters and exhausts (stock the car is quite restricted apparrently).

So good to know nothing serious wrong, slightly dissapointed with the lowish top speed, but hey plenty of time to up the power...

Still I think biggest performance upgrade as usual is for the nut behind the wheel to get the hang of the beastie

Your Mog Aero 8 = 333bhp = 135mph
My Boxster 2.7 = 240bhp = 148mph

Your coefficient of drag = 0.39 ie. bricklike
My coefficient of drag = 0.29 ie. lithe

I think that the Mog's cd figure is the problem. You were also running roof down all the time IIRC, which has got to have an impact. I have read that this doesn't make much difference to the cd figure on an Aero8 but personally I don't buy it.

Interesting.

Actually being a Mk I power is actually 'only' 296bhp.

The CD is v poor obviously (Aero my arse !) but it surely can't be that bad compared to something like (and no disrespect!) Teds Alpina that was hitting 150+ - Also running somewhere around 300 bhp IIRC?

Best run of the day was 139mph with the roof up. Probably would have cracked 140 with better entry technique on the bottom bend, but having chatted with the factory this am I'm clear now that this is pretty much par for the course on a bog standard MKI and not to be worried.

Easy gains in exhause / Air filter. Then chatting to DMS there are another few tweaks worth trying. 350bhp shoudl be easily within reach and the accelleration will be neck snapping....

Will be thinking of upgrades over the winter - but for now it's plenty enough for me..

Got to be worth a couple of mhp!
Leather flying helmet and goggles another potential option!

Oh and cheers Danny - seems all is in order so not to worry. (Though if he can get me on the list for an aeromax with no deposit then I'm in! )

A bit of googling confirms the cd figure on the Alpina B3 is also 0.29, interestingly. As the aerodynamic front spoiler, cancels out the negative effect suffered with the wider front tyres.

Surprising Rich, as the rice rocket (surely defines the term "brick" managed 154 on its last outing. I suppose the P1 does have the aero kit, but there are only so many wings and spoilers you can put on a box shaped mobile.

Either way, we all know the most fun to be had is in the corners

Truely amazed that the P1 gives a better Vmax than a Boxter, but there you have it

Who rattled your cage?

Anyway your car's got 40 more horses than mine.

Agree with you about the corners though.

Morgan screens are the killer though, its flat (IIRC, or near as dammit) and not at a wonderfully vmaxxy angle.

In true Vmax spirit, MORE POWER is justified!!
