Does anyone know if its possible to find out if I entered a clean air zone.

I was dropping my daughter of at University today on the edge of the zone and I'm pretty certain I didn't enter but the website for paying doesn't appear to tell you if you entered or not. It seems to be a £0, £9 or £60 gamble.

None of the CAZs will tell you if you entered or not. It’s not in their financial interest to do so.

I wrote to them to ask - they couldn't tell me.

I reckon there is a legal loophole there - they can't (shouldn't be able to) prosecute you if they can't tell you.

If enough people wrote to them to ask, and then were willing to have their day in court, it would I think, crash the system.

Besides, I don't think it's morally justifiable to prosecute you.

Anyway, in my case, they said we can't tell you, but speak to us when the fine comes. It did, and they waived it, but made me pay the congestion charge.

Which halls, and which motorway junction did you use?

If you have the timeline enabled on Google maps, you should be able to find out the exact route you took and then check if you entered or not.

This - let us know where you drove and as a local, we can probably tell you!

If you do find out you have been inside the zone be careful with paying the correct people, unlike my sister who recently paid an unscrupulous website £15 rather than the correct £9.00 to the Gov site

I'm not sure if that's strictly true. Birmingham told me I didn't owe anything when I went to Aston University and TfL told me I had to pay the CC when i dropped my youngest off at Uni.

We came off the M5 at junction 17 and travelled to the centre. She lives near the coop at the top of St Michael's Hill, near Clarence Place which is definitely outside the zone. However we were looking to buy some shelves so travelled to a Screwfix nearby, then with all the excitement of driving in a 20 zone we missed her road and looped round a few times. I remember seeing green cloud signs but I'm reasonably certain I didn't enter.

I'm happy (rage) to pay the £9 if I went in but I buggered if I'm paying £9 if I didn't, as they don't give refunds.

What would be nice is a quick online check.

only the very bottom of St Michael's hill is in the zone so it slightly depends on where you went! if the Screwfix was the one on White Ladies road (seems like a normal high street shop with no specific parking) then you are probably okay - if you went through the centre to find a screwfix then probably not!

Can you access your timeline on Google Maps, or do you use Life360? You can see where you've been on this.

Thread about it in the computer section at the moment. Doesn't sound very good.

I filled out their online form asking if I entered the zone so we will see what happens.

I`d just pay the £9 and be done with it. We had the in laws visit recently and despite warning them numerous times, they still managed to go into the CAZ and get two fines. We live 2 miles outside the zone and often have to go into it to get anywhere in Bristol.

Glad to hear it!! smile

All of these clean air zones seem to be set up in such a way that any doubts will often result in you either paying up (whether you needed to or not) or getting a fine.

Let's be honest, if the technology and process is in place to send you a fine if you haven't paid, they could just as easily send you an invoice for the amount you owe instead. But of course that's no where near as lucrative as fining people who make a mistake. Proof if it were needed that these are money makers above all else.

The signs demarcate the zones, and in so doing "tell you" where the charge applies. A bit like private parking, etc. It's also possible to go online and get a detailed map of which roads it includes, if you can be arsed.

Not being arsed or being ignorant of signs doesn't invalidate prosecution. Morals don't come into it.

Coincidental to my post further up, we have just had the in-laws round again. We gave them a detailed description of how to get to the other side of Bristol, avoiding the CAZ, but I can guarantee they will know best and get another fine laugh
