Diagnostic code F and the chattering relays
Discussion
Hi,
Really sorry to keep coming back with questions, but the cars driving me crazy at the moment. Not sure if its always been there but when i turn the ignition on i'm getting code f(so long since its run normal). Does this mean i've a faulty fuel level sensor?? Also i've still got two relays chattering intermittently, the fuel pump and the master ignition relays. Not sure if the fuel level sensor and relays are a related problem, but car obviously stutters when driven.
Would take it to the dealer but haven't long had 24k service and rebuild so not exactly well funded at present.
Any help desperately appreciated.

This should help you to identify fault codes.
A - Speedo sensor not activating zero switch or switch broken
B - Speedo sensor not releasing zero switch or switch broken
C - Water level sensor not activating zero switch or switch broken
D - Water level sensor not releasing zero switch or switch broken
E - Fuel level sensor not activating zero switch or switch broken
F - Fuel level sensor not releasing zero switch or switch broken
G - Water level sensor open circuit
H - Air temp sensor open circuit
I - Oil temp sensor open circuit
J - Oil pressure sensor open circuit
K - Fuel level sensor open circuit
L - Erratic road speed sensor input
O - No communications between analogue and control
Thanks
Howard.

Alexis,
I would start looking for an earth fault, it should be fairly straight forward if you have a dvm to identify which wires from the relay coils are connected to ground (-ve). Temporarily run in your own ground wires for the faulty relays (you can install them in parrallel with the existing no need to disconnect the existing)if the relays stop chattering you know the fault is earth related. You will then have to trace the wiring out until you find the poor connection/s (Check every connector for corrosion).
If it isn't earth related then look at the supply side to the relay coils and trace the wires back, again check every connector for corrosion.
Please note I would not recommend running the car long term with a temporary wiring fix if this does indeed work. If you do need to replace any wiring or connectors its imperative a proper job is done.....last thing you want is to be left with is a molten lump of plastic n metal.
Its unlikely to be the relays themselves but if you havent already done so....open them up and check to see if the contacts are burned, its very possible that they could be burned anyway due to the chattering. If so you will need to evaluate their condition and decide if you need to change them out for new ones when you can afford to.
If I had my car I would trace this out myself and send you the info. Sorry mate this is the best I can offer I hope it helps you some what.

Cheers for that Howard, reading some of the earler threads, it seems that code F would not be related to the Ignition realy and fuel pump relay chattering insanely which is the BIG problem.
Just noticed what you do for a living. You should know better than the rest of us.
Might be a long shot but have you thought of the alarm/immobiliser? I'm guessing that would cut into both the ignition and fuel pump circuits.

Ha, yeah i no what you mean, i should know better, but i'm used to dealing with logic and not TVR logic
which as i've discovered is totally irrational!!! I've since discovered that the Ignition relay is switching fine now. I've ran a temporary supply direct from the battery now to the Fuel pump just to test the pump and the car is still stuttering. Its fine on just plodding around but as soon as you open it up it just judders and stutters with no power????
