So there's been a lot of hands on videos etc. over the weekend from the ADAC conference...

Are we all as hyped as I am? It sounds like they're really cherry picking all of the best ideas they can and combining it all in to one sim, if they pull it all off it's going to be very impressive!

General stuff that's been confirmed by the devs during the various interviews / presentations:

Large open world maps alongside the race tracks. Potentially some procedural generation of huge open world maps with hundreds of km of roads, although they also mentioned using lidar data etc. so clearly some real elements too.

A proper progression system, earn credits, buy / upgrade your cars (with upgrades from real world partners, both visual and mechanical). No micro-transactions. Ability to 'rent' cars for multiplayer / e-sports purposes or just general sandbox style of play, just no customisation of rented cars which seems sensible.

Partnered with SimGrid to provide multiplayer hosting, but players still able to host their own servers to support league racing like LFM etc.

VR / triple screen support from the off.

Further development of the physics / tyre model, no 'sim-cade' concessions, they know their audience.

Modding to be supported once it's fully released, with the intention of supporting modders (cars and tracks) to be able to actually work with manufacturer licences. Interesting how this side of it develops.

Significantly improved wet weather model, organicaly drying line based on where tyres go, water affected by gravity (i.e it'll run down hill etc.)

Obviously the graphics look great and all that fluff.

It really does sound like a very ambitious project, I've bought a first class ticket on the hype train anyway hehe

The only game currently I'm looking forward to, well plus the new GTA and Half Life 3. smile

So I know naff all about VR or PC gaming really but...
If I was interested in this, would the power of the PC affect how it comes out on a VR headset?

Yes, 100%. You’ll need a powerful PC to run a sim on VR at decent quality.

Think of VR like running two views of the game on 2 high resolution monitors, and where you ideally require 90fps or so for a pleasant experience.

So yes, decent hardware is required for newer games in VR. The original Assetto Corsa you could get away with something fairly old and it'll still run well.

Today is the day. Pretty decent list of cars and circuits for early access

I already own the original, and from everything I'm seeing, this is a must have too. I always hoped Polyphony Digital and Sony would let Gran Tourismo come out on PC, but it looks like this is a step towards that dream goal.

I'm a bit worried they didn't announce a price yet for their early access game with no multiplayer.

There's a pretty good chance I'll get this considering I've played everything Kunos has made, going right back to the original Netkar demos he'd post on Race Sim Central, many years ago!

It sounds properly ambitious this one, so I think I'll hang back and see how it plays out for a bit. I expect it'll take a while to mature.

Strewth - people leaving Steam Reviews within hours of an early access release, complaining that it's not optimised. laugh

I decided to ignore everything I said earlier and it's downloading now... biggrin

Barely works at all for me. It crashes to desktop when it gets to the track more often than not, and I can't get it to run on triple screens at all.

When I could actually get to a track, it was good. I managed to get one track to load and did a few laps in the Alpine in practice mode. It still has that nice weighty feeling that AC always had and the graphics are nice (albeit running very poorly).

It's disappointing that it's as unstable as it is already, as that doesn't scream that it's a solid bit of software, but we'll see. I'll try again after a few more updates.

Edit: I guess I understand why people were reviewing it now smile

Yeah, a friend with triples has parked it until that's sorted, probably won't take them long. I have an ultrawide and it runs fine, have the graphics set on ultra and it's stunning.

I only had time for an hour last night and just took an MX-5 Cup car out around Imola (mainly to get a quick snapshot comparison to iRacing) but pretty happy with first impressions in terms of handling and FFB but I'm not a fast/serious sim-racer, just a gamer. The only real concern was it feels a bit too easy to recover when you lose the car through oversteer. I was deliberately driving like a bit of a tit and caught the car at angles that never would have been recovered in iRacing. I'm sure it'll make for good racing but it didn't feel quite right but obviously that's just from a quick go with just one car.

The game is clearly early access and still a lot to be added but I can see myself playing this a lot.

Isn't that more of an iRacing thing? It's always had slightly odd physics around that area.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I've been on iRacing since the start and when it first launched back in 2008 it was particularly bad for that, when you began to lose the rear the spin felt almost scripted and you just couldn't catch it. However, with new tyre models, etc it is way better now and you can throw the MX5 about and play with it pretty well, especially in the rain and it feels realistic to me.

This is a clip from my short time on AC Evo last night. It's definitely not the best example to show what I'm on about and it felt worse in-car than it looks from the replay but if you pause it the car gets rotated by about 45 degrees and there's hardly any time lost. It felt too easy and arcadey. Dunno, more testing required.... smile
