From local teletext:
A college student who hopes to graduate without debt by selling $1m dollars worth of internet advertising space has already made $74,000 (£43,500).

Alex Tew, 21, of Cricklade, Wiltshire, who will go to Nottingham University in October to study business management, launched www.milliondollarhomepage.com.

Companies choose from the one million pixels on the site and buy their own for one dollar (60p) each.

"I have lots of investment ideas but want to be sensible," he said.
Brilliant idea, wish I'd thought of it! :D

I don't believe he has made that much, what little advertising is available it can't be cost effective at all.

I acquired a donation of 60,000DM (20k£ at that time) from a prospective employer for a faculty when I was a student at uni. Raising cash isn't that rare then.

The only thing it would really be worth is pagerank, which at this moment stands at 0. I expect that to grow quite high though.

Good idea though, wish I'd thought of it.

well he's in The Times today and has made $372,000 so far in the 40 odd days it's been running...

Not a bad return really

Also he's obviously learnt a lot from some of our more antagonistic PHers. In his interview with the Times he says:

"I’d love a car, but I don’t want anything stupid like a BMW."

I wonder how long before people start using students as investment funds? Think you could pick out a winner and get a good rate of return?

Nah, the staff are rubbish. They spend all their time reading pistonheads.
