Surely road markings are standardised for a reason. This idea of confusing drivers and pedestrians and then they'll slow down, which is safe, just seems bizarre to me. Time will tell I suppose.

If the markings make users think and drive, ride or walk with greater caution perhaps they'll turn out to be a good thing. Pity we don't have them in Chesterfield, the place needs brightening up.

Considering the number of drivers who don't understand or ignore standard road markings and signs, maybe it's time we tried something new.

Once the locals get used to it, they will carry on as before.
If they drove like idiots before, they'll still drive like idiots.

Most commuters, on their phones white driving, won’t notice.

I always thought that a pedestrian crossing had a legal status. Are painted leaves a pedestrian crossing at all?

Anyway, probably worth a try, provided they are prepared to reinstate normal markings immediately if the experiment fails.

We have 50+ years of training and conditioning people about zebra crossings. How on earth would you actually know that is a crossing?

Also I see their point on it encouraging kids that it is to play in.

This is probably up there with the dumbness of that promenade that painted lots of wavy lines then binned them after 6 weeks.

Looking at the location, it doesn't look ped-friendly in its old layout.

Experimenting is a good thing. The comment from the driving instructor made me laugh:

Andrew Rock, a driving instructor from the area, told BBC Radio Berkshire he would be getting his students to "approach with caution" and believed the crossing was "potentially dangerous".

No st, Sherlock, that's exactly what you are supposed to teach!

There was a rainbow crossing last time I looked in Reading.

It seems to be going down well with the locals:

I suppose it looks pretty, but I can't see it helping with safety as nobody knows what it is!

"Russia on mission to cause mayhem in UK" according to MI5. Erm... I think our local authorities are managing perfectly well withouth Russia's help.

As a local, everyone treats it as the double mini roundabout that it used to be. I’ve seen a couple of close calls with pedestrians so it’s only a matter if time before someone gets taken out. At which point, I suspect the council will have a rethink.
