Won't tick over below 2000rpm

I took the two rocker covers and the inlet plenum earlier this week to polish them. I did this with no problem and put it all back together. I did not have any proper gasket sealer for the plenum so had to use silicon. It started fine and ran well. That night i went for a drive with my girlfriend and it ran very well, smooth and sweet.
When i got in it a few hours later to go home i started it and it sat at 2000rpm. I have tried everything but with no joy. The only thing i can think is that the silicon has dried out and its letting in air somewhere.

Is this a possible cause.

I might as well be the first to advise but check the stepper! it may be the culprit or not helping the situation if it's dirty.

Air leak seems credible. The usual trick is to spray carb cleaner round the outside, when the engine picks up you know that's where air is being drawn in. If not that it might be as simple as a vac/breather hose fallen off, or perhaps the stepper motor has jammed/become unplugged in the 'fully open' position.

I have checked the stepped and it seems to be fine. I can only think that it's not sealing properly around the plenum.
I will take it off again tonight.
