Miserable wet day and having reached peak boredom, I thought I would file my tax return.

Got all the info collated and went to log on using my UTR and password. But no!!

It now appears I need my passport details and also scan QR codes, download an app so I can take a selfie and it can be checked against my passport photos.

Is this new? I don't remember it last year.

I gave up. Being after 5.00 pm, there will be no one available on the helpline.

Be warned if you are one of those late filers.

Jeeeez, sounds insane. It's always been awkward, logging in with very long sequences.

I just log in with user ID & password. Get a text to confirm it's me & Robert is your Mother's brother.

And to think that once upon a time you just could put it in an envelope and post it. Isn't tech great!

Is OP not a British national?

Wife has to jump through similar hoops

OP. It’s not the UTR that should be used but a gateway login?

I think he setting up a new gateway account, new accounts seem to go through a much more rigorous checking process as my son found out recently.

Maybe that's why it's taking you through the rigmarole. As said above, sounds like it's setting you up from fresh.

I set up an account recently for DVLA stuff.
Similar malarkey, surprisingly quite slick though.

No idea what that was all about, but I'm logged in with no app, no passport and no selfie
