Read it S L O W L Y - Hamburg Restaurants
Discussion
I’m off to Hamburg for a few days and will have some free time, mostly in the evening. Can anyone recommend decent restaurants in the city centre, ideally near(ish) to the Hbf/main train station? Good vegetaraian options would be a bonus, nothing too fancy, ideally independent rather than chains. Suggestions don’t have to be solely vegetarian, but a few decent veggie options on the menu would be fine.
TL;DR Hamburg city centre, casual not fancy, good veggie options (entire place/menu choice).
While we’re at it, quick spots for lunch and decent coffee as well.

No. I’ve never heard of that app, so downloading it now, will be useful for other trips too I imagine. https://www.opentable.co.uk/s?dateTime=2024-10-09T...
I was more after personal recommendations, I’ve obviously Googled restaurants etc near where I’m staying and I’m happy to wing it and see what takes my fancy, but some starters for ten are also useful (even if it’s just places to avoid).
I did reply to this exact topic on your other thread asking the same.

Traditional German, on the river, a favourite of mine. About two or three stops from the main Hbf on the S1 or S3.Not great for Vegetarians though.

Another place, 5 mins from main Hbf, traditional again and maybe a bit meat heavy..
Coffee, I never have a problem in Espresso house, chain coffee shop but pretty decent and can be found everywhere, think there's one outside the Hbf.

I lived in Hamburg for a couple of years in 2009-11 and used to go to the HBF specifically to eat. There were quite a few food outlets at the station that were both good value and excellent quality. In fact I'm now drooling at the thought of the Knusprige Ente mit Gemuse (Crispy duck with vegetables) that I used to get at the Asia Kitchen. Other similar vendors are there too.
Other favourites were Phở Đức on Steindamm (Vietnamese) and a Persian restaurant which I can't remember the name of but I don't think it exists any more.
I used to spend a lot of time with friends eating at the many casual restaurants in Colonnaden - it's a pedestrianised street and in the summer it's filled with tables and chairs. I used to visit Sushi Circle there as you could have all you can eat sushi at the belt with no restrictions for 19 Euros which was a bargain if you had a healthy appetite! And they had the expensive stuff that you won't find at Yo Sushi. You can then go for a walk after dinner in Planten un Blomen which is a park filled with interesting things to see like various plants, sculptures, a giant chess board etc.
As you asked for veggie options I won't suggest the Hofbräuhaus. One thing that Hamburg was not good at was Indian food. In fact I did not find a decent curry anywhere in the city and it's the only food I craved when I was there.
Anyway enjoy Hamburg, it's a beautiful city and if you have a few hours to kill I'd heartily recommend that you visit Miniatur Wunderland which is the world's biggest model railway/model city. It's unbelievably massive in scale and there are endless details to enjoy.
