10:09 23Sep2005 RTRS-Suspicious package shuts part of Manchester airport

LONDON, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Police closed part of Manchester airport on Friday morning because of a suspicious package on the apron between terminals one and two, an airport spokeswoman told Reuters.
Police said a man was tackled using a Taser gun and had been arrested under the terrorism act.

Quick, panic, panic, cause fear and worry and justify more anti-terror laws!

Probably a bloody empty bag! Glad they used a Tazer though, the poor bloke in London wasn't so lucky with multiple shots to the head!

Your Airport Corresspondedent here

If I mentioned the word 'shambles' in the same sentence as 'airport security' would anyone be surprised (see any thread about airports and security I have posted on).

So.......'matey' tools up to North Gate (staff/vehicular access) in a white metro. He rushes into the holding pen on foot (two barriers) where the completely unarmed security guy normally takes down your reg No. whilst you go inside to have your testicles weighed by a gay security consultant. Not fancying the humiliating bodysearch matey proceeds through the second barrier at a fair lick using the cunning ruse of ducking under it.
Matey now proceeds down the internal road and turns 90 right onto the apron area where all the heavy metal is parked reasonably close to the buildings.
By now the 'security' personel have got onto the keystone cops using the dog and bone who arrive in force.....several minutes later.
Easily spotted by being the only person actually carrying a bag (and not wearing high viz) matey is challenged (wanna fight mate?) by four hunky types who go directly to the 'falling down the stairs at the station' routine - but in full gaze of various members of the great unwashed. The news says a tazer was used but it's hard to tell with all the slapping going on.

Matey is now taken away leaving the suspect bag lying on the road by stand 26. Meanwhile airport activity continues apace with the bag being guarded by those completely bomb proof road cones. After a period of at least 1/2 an hour some genius decides that just maybe there is a threat to the public and has terminal 1 evacuated (which is where I was). Being hidden behind an Xray machine drinking T with my feet up I didn't notice the place emptying until it had all gone suspiciously quiet. No fire alarm or phone call or announcement by loudhailer or even a kiss my arse. Terminals 1&2 are at a virtual standstill and T1 is utter chaos as everyone is chucked out of the building to a safe place. Since I have wings of steel this obviously does not apply to me.
Anywho I can't go anywhere to do my job so I sit around making tea and eating bikkies.

A couple of hours later word gets back to us that the bomb squad have set up shop...sold a few trinkets from their souvenir stall and neutralised the bag with mateys return ticket and sarnies in it. Chaos resumes with flights all over the shop and major delays which will take at least a day to sort out.

Maybe this time the airport will sit up and take notice about it's supreme laxness re security and evacuation procedures. Any fule kno that getting airside is easy peasy if you don't want to have your bag searched. I won't reveal here how I would do it but it's not exactly serchlights and dog patrols and years of taking notes on the 'goons' movements to effect access.

Anywho - had matey been a serious contender he could have set off a big device at a major airport. It's a major schlep to where he was apprehended - I'd have taken a vehicle.

Most worrying...if you care about such things.

another little storyette.......pre 9/11 ,my mate, who is an engineer for another airline ,walks onboard a 737 do some checks.....sees an unfamiliar bloke ,no hi-vis,no security pass etc, sitting in the pilots seat fiddling with switches...

mate says: 'can i help you mate?'
loony says ' how can i get the radios to work ?'
mate says 'which company do you work for?'
loony says ' i don't work here i just wanted to see if i could get it started'

my mate rings cops straightaway and they duly cart him away.......turns out this chap had 'escaped' from his keepers jumped the fence ,just picked out a plane to play with !

He wasn't the only one though.......a few years back, some twisted had an grudge against someone and wanted to shoot them with a shotgun....trouble was, that person wasn't in thier house when he called....so he steams off...jumps the fence at the airport.....shoots and kills the first person he bumps into which was the poor Met man in his weather station building in a remote area of the airfield .......

very true , very sad

Having problems on this one the guy clearly had some problems I guess if Shoot to kill had been used he would now be dead.

But if had been a terrorist the guy would now be dead.

I think some of the police in Stockport must have seen this on the news and decided they wanted a bomb of their own. (bit like women and babies really). Either that or Stockport police had a tip off that Stockport police station was 2nd on Bin Ladens hit list for the NW. Last night the entire town was closed off for 4 hours while the bomb squad detonated the 8 pack left behind by the Brinnington revolutionary front. NVQ level 4 Muppetry

The bloke in london was an illegal immigrant I have no problem with the police shooting lawbreakers. The only policeman that got it wrong was the one that shot him in the sholuder if he had have been a suicide bomber the shoulder shot would have set it off.
If he hadn't have ran away he wouldn't have been shot
If they had shot the guy yesterday the taxpayer (ie me) would not have to give him bed and board in a mental institute for life. After all he was holding a suicase above his head shouting "allah be great".
Do the maths 8 bullets is a lot cheaper than feeding the idiot for life.
Rant over.
