Coat for walking

Looking for a decent jacket for walking over the autumn/winter and colder periods.
I don't want a huge thick fluffy jacket
What I would like is one that feels more minimal and lighter weight. It's for use in the UK so waterproof, warm but breathable too
Budget: up to £300
Looking mainly on SportsShoes.com who sell Raab, Montane, Berghaus, Patagonia, Regatta, North Face and some others. I quite like the look of the Raab ones.
Any recommendations or things to look out for?

If you want minimal and lightweight, go for layers.
Thermal base, thermal mid and then lightweight waterproof outer. The outer can then easily be removed when you're warm and it's not raining.
Minimal and lightweight doesn't really work if you're just going to wear a t shirt underneath.

I live in the Lakes and do a lot of fell and dog walking. My gear is mostly Rab as I like the fit and they're British. As others have said you really want to go with layers. Top/water proof layer I currently have is Arc'teryx it's really light to stick in a bag and can use in all year round in wet weather. You can have the best waterproof coat going but in any reasonable amount of rain need waterproof trousers too.

I do like Rab, Rohan and North face jackets. They wear well and in sales prices well. My fav is my NF ski jacket that I use almost daily here when it’s snowing. Really very warm despite being shorter on my torso than I used to wear.
More recently I’ve been buying Mountain Equipment clothes for layers, and quite impressed with them.

Have a look at the Rab Valiance: my missus has one and she loves it.

Waterproof down jacket that is not overwarm - you can walk in it without getting heat stroke yet it's plenty warm enough to keep you toasty when standing or sitting around outside in sub zero temps.
It's also not too 'puffy' so it's fairly discrete for street wear.
If you want an unlined/uninsulated jacket, then check out the Keela Munro. I've got 2 I love them so much ( one dark green and one grey as I can't stand brightly coloured jackets)... it's much warmer than a conventional hardshell (waterproof) jacket due to it's construction.
I've had mine out in some pretty extreme weather and it's never let me down. Proper blizzard at the top of Kinder Scout last winter barely even troubled it.

The plain coloured version are, again, nice and discrete.
If you want a REALLY warm jacket, go for the Rab Batura (I appreciate you said you don't want a massive thick jacket, but I thought I'd throw it in there): above your budget but you might get lucky in the sales. Warmest coat I've ever owned (black version) and I've got a LOT of outdoor gear as I spend most weekends hiking in all conditions.

I like to dig through SportPursuit, just bought a £250 Montane ski jacket for £90 ( this one, but it's gone up!) and it's really nice - light/thin to wear but with some insulation - I have a very heavy duty HH parka for when it's proper cold.
