I've got a tiny 1mm chip with a 10mm crack in my panoramic roof. I'd like to avoid it getting any bigger.

I tried Autoglass and they point blank refused any sort of repair to any glass that wasn't a windscreen.

Is it really the case I can only wait for it to get so bad it warrants a complete glass replacement?

Does your glass policy cover this? Recently hunted for a late spec Euro6 Skoda Yeti. All the top spec have a panoramic glass roof, which on the Skoda always leak eventually. However I was also surprised by the amount of insurance companies that specifically excluded the pano roof from the glass policy.

No I have to pay the vehicle excess of £350 for glass roof repairs or replacements (Aviva)

Can't find any near me (Cambridge). There are mobile Optic-Kleer franchise operatives, which I might try if one answers their phone.

Can't comment on Autoglass's policy one what they will or won't repair, but if you can post an image of the damage (place something next to it to help with the resolution and provide scale) I'll hopefully be able to tell you if there is any scope for a repair.

Thanks, here's a pic. I can only feel the chip not the crack which seems to be in the layers underneath.

What are the chances of it getting worse without repair? I still haven't found anyone local.

Thanks.

In the context of glass repair, that looks viable. Slightly complex in that too much pressure could extend the crack, but certainly worth trying. I would.

Leaving it means the torsional forces could extend the crack, plus with the cold weather outside and the warm cabin inside means you'll have two layers of glass behaving differently.

I can imagine it'll keep growing so best keep an eye on it. How quickly it'll spread is anyone's guess but can imagine it will.

Sadly it's in a place where a lot of torsion occurs so will be working away at it every time you corner. How much is hard to tell (I don't know how strong these are relative to a windscreen) but will soon become apparent.

Naturally, I don't promote nor sell anything like that. Being in the trade means I should poo-poo them but some have achieved decent results using them. That said, it's what you would find acceptable. Some will be happy that the damage has been put through a process and that in itself will do. The same applied for when someone with a pro kit does it. I've seen some shocking 'attempts' by people who purport to do it for a living.

What the DIY kit does not do is work a complex break. Something like the one in the image is delicate as it already is a crack (some breaks will look like pockets of air). Resin will not penetrate a crack without careful manipulation of the damage. Also, given pressure and vacuum cycles are key to inducing the resin, too much pressure could extend the crack(s).

A DIY kit will not buy you the experience and skills needed for all types of glass damage.

When my Polestar windscreen and panoramic roof were stone damaged in 2020 the leasing company arranged for a company called Glas-Weld to repair it as there were limited spare parts available. It was a good repair and I forgot it was even there. Was also missed when the car was inspected for return 2 years later.
