Hi all. I’ve got a lovely letter through the post saying that from 1.4.25 there is going to be car tax applied to my car (currently been zero since I got it in 2020).

2 quick questions.

1. My tax is due on the 1.4.25 (ie the day it comes in). Does that mean if I tax it in March (when I get the reminder) it will still be free? Do I remember that when the car tax goes up for normal cars you can still get it at the cheaper rate if you taxed it before the date?

2. Bit silly. But if the answer is no to the first question. Could I SORN by car for a day in March and the tax it the next day for a year and get effectively a year more free?

I know it’s not a lot (£190 currently) but better off in my pocket than DVLAs!

You can renew it whenever you like online, it then creates a new 12 month tax, regardless of what is remaining.

Give it a go now, just take a few minutes with the ref number from your v5.

edit: Someone else on PH recommended updating it prior to the budget in case anything changes earlier.

Yeah, sorn the car 28th Feb and tax it 1st March.

ETA

You'll save the yearly rise in car tax every year too.

Perfect thank you. Just done it now and extended it until 31/9/25 for free. I'll do it again in March and see if they've closed the loophole!

So, EVERYONE WITH AN EV - TAX YOUR CAR AHEAD OF 1.4.25!!!!

Mine was due Sep 25.
Just renewed it (£0) using the code on the V5
So now will be due Dec 25.

Will renew each month until April, if the system allows.

The £15 odd a month saving is better in my pocket!

Another trick:-
Pay for it by a cash-back credit card and receive refunds by cheque

PS
Only works if your tax is a positive amount

PPS
Every little helps

No need to SORN. Just re-tax wink

Is this likely to work?
Most of the EV groups I'm in say this loophole was closed, and to expect a bill from 1 April for the difference pro-rata. Can't find anything concrete online to confirm either way...

I haven’t received a reminder letter. Are you supposed to? I normally get them about a month before it’s due (currently “paying” £0 every August)

Also I have a PHEV that was registered Jan 2016 (65 plate) will this actually be subject to a rise or will it stay at £0?

I did mine yesterday and now have tax until 1 Dec 25, it was due to expire 1st April 25. I'll try again March 1st.

I re- did mine a couple of days ago without issue as well. I don’t see them going back looking for the difference come 1/4/25. If they had closed the loophole they wouldn’t allow you to re-tax unless there was only a few days left to run on the existing.
