Hi,
I have bought a 987.2 and have to say I am increasingly disappointed with the intake / exhaust note. Even on a cold start there is very little theater, this is even worse in the cabin. Below 3.5-4k is sounds like a Dyson. It sounds ok past 4, but only ok. I didn't pick up on this during the test drive unfortunately.

Previously I had a 2.7 987.1 and the noise was great. You could hear the engine right behind you working away at all RPM. I have a 996.2 and its similar to the 987.1 - real character and noise throughout the rev range. Is this the same for other DFI engines in the 991 / 981?

Is there any fixing the DFI lump? Happy to throw some money at an exhaust and intake system. Anyway it will sound the the M96/M97 or am I better cutting my costs and moving on to something else.

I bought this from Carnewal for my 987.2 Cayman S, its just the right amount of noise, I see they say the newest version is louder...hmmm.

One had a 987.1 and 987.2 and they both sound poor with std non sport exhaust and good with updated exhaust so fear not.

Dunc.

I had a Carnewal exhaust on my 987.2 2.9 which I loved. It didn't drone at lower rpms but sounded fantastic when pressing on. Definitely recommended.

OP. Did you manage to improve things?

just bought a 3.4s as a runabout and it doesn't have PSE so sounds incredibly quiet more so than I was prepared for so currently just weighing up my options but will need to do something!

I had been told there is a mod that can be done to the standard exhaust which gives it a significant increase in noise but can't seem to find a diy link to it .

Do air filters make much difference on a 987 ? I fitted some open ones to a 718 Spyder and tbhI couldn't really tell much difference !

Are you thinking of the one where the sleeve that sits on the pipe between both mufflers is slid across (#18 here)? Yes it works but too much and it causes a lot of drone.

I had something done on a 911 years ago and was wondering if a 987 would be the same, just stumbled across this whilst having a search on here.

anyone had this done ?

Yes, did it during my early days of ownership and it works fine. IMHO it does have an effect but each to their own. Give it a go and see if you like it. Only caution is that it will cause you to fail the emission test and it lightly fouls up the underbody heatshields.

do you still have the car by any chance ? wouldn't mind knowing what size pipe they use as a bypass ? imagine the bigger the bore the louder you make it so could prob play about if you wanted it louder.

Yup, couldn't find myself ever parting with it. Went down to take a look at it appears to be a 60mm pipe either side of the sleave.

Thanks for that will give that a whirl and see if it gives it a little volume, I had a few 987s many years ago and they have all had PSE and It never crossed my mind that this one doesn't have it til I went to give it some beans after I bought it other day and was horrified by the silence !
