VW Golf 1.4 TSI SE Mk 7

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy one of these as a run around for my son, 2009 with 120k.
I know very little about Golfs but it seems like a tidy well looked after car, I think cambelt is due at 133k so any idea on the cost and how critical is it mileage wise as that could take 2 or 3 years at expected mileage.
Any other thoughts specifically on the Mk 7 1.4 TSI would be appreciated

The 1.4’s are decent engines, in some ways better than the 1.5 replacement I had in my mk7 golf.

The 1.4s in the mk5/6 are no known for their reliability. They like to stretch their chains, have tensioners fail and like a drink of oil.

The 1.4 TSI in the mk7 is a completely different engine and are generally pretty reliable

Also look at a seat Leon of the same era, same engine, but generally cheaper than a like for like golf

Mrs Adenauer had a Golf 7 1.4TSI and it used to absolutely guzzle oil. No idea why.

She's now had a 7.5 GTI Performance for the last 6 months and it hasn't used any oil at all. Just petrol.

I have a Mk7 GT TSI 1.4. It's a 2013 car on 80,000 miles. Only thing to fail outside of regular servicing was the water pump.

DSG has been faultless, returns 50mpg on a run, around 38mpg during local trips.

Thanks for all the comments, I've found a tidy Mk 7 1.2 that looks like a good option so I'll do some more research on that.
