Where can I legally park?

Trying to establish whether it is legal to park on the grass verge at the side of a road, what about on a grass Common next to the road? Any idea.

Our Parish Council had an issue with parents parking on a grass verge to collect/drop off school children. Our local police officer advised that as long as no obstruction occurred, then it was only trespass, a civil offence. However, other local laws may over-ride that general rule.

Yes but the answers found are very inconclusive, some suggest it is ok, others not.

Then start to narrow it down by being specific with the precise location you're asking about. With the search examples above, Buckinghamshire have introduced local legislation to prevent it, other geographical areas have not.

Local to me, we have some commons where they have allowed roadside parking for twenty feet, and banned it beyond there.

Morally, dont park on the grass, its not designed for cars.

Legally, I'd say that was private land belonging to Albyns Farm. Essex hasnt banned verge parking so if you cant stay within the dotted footpath boundaries shown on the OS 1:25000 map, you might be alright.

If the farmer has asked you not to, don't. If its a busybody, go the farmer, and ask if its OK if you agree a specific spot (or spots so as not to damage the grass). While it doesn't look like a regular pasture, he probably wont want either tyre gouges or dog eggs all over the place.

No, it is Common land with grass areas adopted by the Council. No law against putting up a sign which says "private land", even if it isn't.

Common land does not give you the right to drive on it, the road can still be private.

Google ‘Street view’ is not the be-all-and-end-all of it; it is often recorded by a camera mast on a backpack - in those specific cases you certainly cannot drive there.
