Watching Marcus Wareing on Food Network and he's calling almonds 'awlmonds'. They used to be called 'armands' - the L being silent. What does the panel think?

Does anyone else struggle to explain the fact that they like almonds but they hate marzipan?

My mum could never understand the concept, and neither can my wife.

Well, I'm surprised. Despite all posters going for the spoken L, 36% of voters skip it, ie pronounce it properly smile

I wonder if this comes from people learning to pronounce words from text rather than spoken? For example when I was very young I read a lot and came across the word 'recipe'. I'd never seen it before so in my head pronounced it as 'REK-ipe'.

Next week - turmeric and its partner 'tumeric'!

Marzipan contains almond extract, often synthetic. Cheap stuff contains very little in the way of real almonds. I love almonds but hate marzipan. I guess it's like people hating tomatoes but loving ketchup or vice versa. Almonds are an ingredient, marzipan is a recipe containing multiple things.
