Hi all,

I'm after some advice regarding a speeding letter I've had through for a car I sold back in June from Merseyside Police. I sold it on Facebook marketplace & did the DVLA transfer there and then online. I can't remember any of the details so assume I must have sold it to a trader. I received email confirmation from the DVLA that I was no longer the owner. However I have spoke to the DVLA and they say a new log book hasn't been issued.

I need to notify them who I'd sold the car to. The problem is I don't have any details only a name & chat logs. I tried speaking to the guy via chat who was just an arse & didn't want to know. I wouldn't say threatening but told me not to involve him so generally unhelpful. I'm not blocked.

What can I do in this situation? I spoke to the DVLA after being in a queue for 40 minutes who didn't really help give me any details. I've tried calling the number on the notice but no answer.

I know in hindsight I should have done a receipt but it was only a cheap car so didn't bother.

You have the DVLA email of confirmation. Can you not just print that out and return it back with the NIP letter that you received?

Pretty simple to do.

I think that's what I will do but reading the letter they are stating it's my responsibility to inform them who I sold it to so I guess I'm just worried that won't be good enough.

That information must have been provided to DVLA when you did it online.

What happened to the V5 when you sold the car?

You have done, the DVLA notification that you are no longer the owner is proof of that.

If still in the trade the DVLA should still know about it. Probably gone to be a 'pool car' for crims.

I can't remember exactly but he must have took it. My memory isn't great at the best of times let alone 6 months ago 🤣 I sold it cheap spares or repairs but starting to wish I'd just had scrapped it

As a person other than keeper, you are obliged to provide any information which is in your power to give and which may lead to identification of the driver.

There is no requirement for you to go digging for information which is not currently in your possession.

I had exactly this situation happen to me earlier this year. Sold a car in November 2022, got notification from DVLA that I was no longer the registered keeper. All good. I binned the DVLA notice a year or so after sale.

Fast forward to 2024 and I get three NIP's through the post in a week, 70 in a 40, 69 in a 40 and 59 in a 40. Tried responding online to say I wasn't the registered keeper but the Birmingham safety camera partnership only allowed me to submit change of registered owner date up to six months prior to the offence date, not the 18 or so month it was.

In the end I had to call the number on the NIP and get routed through to their Birmingham central ticket office. Got through to a really helpful police officer who was able to do some digging with the little information I had (it was an eBay sale so I had email address, post code and phone number). She was able to find the new owner and re-route the tickets to them. Turns out the new owner had marked the car for scrap so whilst I was no longer the registered keeper, I was the last recorded owner.

I've since had seven more NIP's through, all in the Birmingham area. For each I've had to email the central ticket office with the latest NIP number and they've added it to the list.

I also contacted DVLA who, after nearly a month, confirmed the date I sold the vehicle so it might also be worth contacting them soonish for additional support.

Spooky,

Pretty much as soon as I posted that comment I got an email from the Birmingham central ticket office stating I now need to send the NIPs back with a cover letter (despite there being a long email chain on the subject!).

This is the right answer. Just send short, sweet details.

Police can access the MID to see who's insured on a vehicle..

So I presume these people are also driving around un insured if the ticket office is chasing the previous keeper?

And if that's the case, is there really such a low Police presence on our roads that people are driving around without insurance?

Think I know the answer sadly.

I did check on askmid and it is showing as uninsured so can pretty much guarantee it won't be taxed either. I definitely won't be selling any of my cars to 'traders' again, not worth the hassle.

I had this a few years ago on an old Merc I sold as spares on Facebook. I simply sent Lancashire Police all the details I did have with a covering letter explaining the transaction and never heard a thing after.

Just curious as to the amount of hassle involved. Feels like filling in and returning an S172 request saying sold on this date, no details of buyer retained, v5 transfer done online at the time. In the grand scheme of life admin that feels pretty low on the hassle scale to me biggrin

I had this after a sold a car a couple of years ago. My memory may be playing tricks but I think I was able to go online and send a copy of the DVLA confirmation. Never heard any more about it.

If you do it online you have to enter who you think was driving, you can't just leave it blank.

Any minor inconvenience is world ending for me laugh
