I've driven quite a few of the manual 987s plus a 2.7 981 PDK. The 2.7 981 PDK I thought didn't quite make sense. That engine needed revving and the PDK seemed to want torque if it wasn't to change down. The 981 had Sport+ and tbf I was trying to catch it out which I did but I just felt the engine and box were a bit of a mismatch both for spirited driving and when you want to just squeeze out some modest acceleration. Perhaps full pelt on track all Porsche systems are go but I wouldn't being stepping into a PDK for track driving.

I've driven a manual 2.9 and again you really need to use every last rev on it which sounds like it'd be fun but I prefer the mid range on the 5 Speed 2.7 987.1. I've still got a 2.7 Boxster as I haven't got around to selling it yet since getting a Cayman R which I need to make a decision on keeping or trading for an auto (dodgy left knee and all of sudden dodgy right bleedin shoulder which has precluded track days this summer).

I'm interested in the 2.9 to sidestep future maintenance on HPFP which I'm not sure is too much of a potential issue though my local mechanic has had an 987.2 Cayman S in for it. Naturally the 2.9 is gonna have less torque than a DFi 3.4 but I'm curious what a tune and manifold would bring out of the 2.9 PDK? I gather that you may need to also get a tune for the PDK as well?

So yeah, interested to hear if anyone has any experience with a tuned 2.9 PDK. Principally for casual use and long trips rather than out and out sports driving. It'd be quite an expensive route to take so I can appreciate the 987.2 S PDK may be the way to go.

i have a manual 2.9 so cant comment on the PDK aspect.

However with the M&M equal length manifolds, 200 cell cats, their TUV approved exhaust and a BMC filter element, returned 285 bhp (not PS) and 275 lb/ft when mapped at GAD Tuning via Copse in Woking.

You still have to use the gears to get the speed, but there is a decent mid range now from 3k rpm (not like an S however), but above 4k the run to the red line is much more addictive.

Put in some powerflex inner and central coffin arm inserts to stop the oem flex and for no noticeable extra NVH, you get a nice sharp noticeable improvement on exit off the corners.

Another cheap mod will be a cayman r / boxster spyder ARB and do a nice fast road GEO.

Ah interesting, thanks for the reply. The M&M equal length manifold is the one I’ve got in my sights for my R too if I mod it.

So Copse fitted it for you? Did your old manifold fall victim to any seized bolts? Trying to figure out who I could ask to fit the M&M if I source it myself. With a view to using a place that’s well setup to redrill the block should it need it. Surrey a bit of a jaunt for me from Midlands though.

I never knew of copse until they were recommended to me by a neighbour. The exhaust was fitted by parr in Crawley.

They did warn about studs that could break and the cost to drill the heads.

Thankfully none broke! I got the car 5 years ago on 7.5 k miles and when the exhaust was fitted I think on 28k miles so nothing rusted there.

I got them to put nuts and bolts on the head so if I ever need to swap back to stock there is no risk of issues.

Defiantly the best exhaust and manifold set up if you want to make real tq and hp. Will need mapping with 200 cell cats however.

When we did the dyno before map it was still making stock power but tq was bumped up approx 20 lb ft

Very happy with the way it drives, the car is truly unlocked and sounds great.

I think last things could be lightweight fly and if it was easy to shortern the final drive 10-15pc the car would be perfect!
