I recall a thread some time ago about MTB's, so I know there's a few riders about on here.

Anyway, I just picked up a new '05 S-Works Stumpjumper XTR in dark gunmetal colour. Obviously bagged a very good deal as the '06 versions are about to come out. Mind you, with Specialized the changes are very minimal, so I can reccommend picking up a bargain! The ride is plush and I'm very happy with it.

Now I just need to get fit as I've been lazy for the last 4 years. Any of you lot near Danbury?

Also, anyone know if those static roller trainers work with MTB knobbly tyres?

The single roller kind with an A-frame stand, or the triple roller kind where both wheels roll? Both should work fine, but might be a bit bumpy with MTB tyres and wear them down fairly quickly because they're usually quite a soft compound. Best to get out and ride it how it's meant to be ridden, i.e. outside!

Welcome...just get outside to ride rather than train indoors.
Once you've invested in a quality Gore-tex coat you'll be comfortable on any winters day...and anyway half the fun is getting covered in mud!

Here's my Full Susser..I've got a Rockhopper too that is set up for road riding running 1.25" tyres!

If your serious about using a turbo trainer, get a cheap spare back wheel with a slick tyre on

it's a hell of a lot quieter that way

Nice bike...where's the pics?

I've owned a few Stumpy's

My current scoot is an intense tracer, which uses the specialized 4 bar link set up on the back end

There are many threads about MTB's on here. I have a Kona Stab that is Hope/XTR kitted with some lovely Stratos triple clamps. That is the full on DH/extreme machine. My play bike is a DMR Trailstar with Hope/XT Stuff and a single ring up front. As you can probably tell, I like my more extreme stuff.

If anyone is in the market for an top flight all mountain MTB we have a very light carbon full sus Scott that is full XT with DT hubs and Fox Forks. It is currently £1899 reduced from £2499 and very very nice it is too.

hope you have a the beard and sandles to go with the Marin, Simes

Cheap slick tyre from Halfords better on the rollers... knobblies make the trainer rather loud, and the vibrations in the saddle can be horrendous!

Bit of a spesh rider meself - a 04 S works enduro and a 04 stumpy.

MTBE - Heavy Metal is Bad for You

Which band are you talking about?

Not any band, but the fact that although metallic lead itself is not toxic, its compounds often are.

Why was lead put in petrol anyway?

To improve the octane rating.

What does octane rating mean?

The Octane number of a petrol is the % of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane in a mixture with heptane that has the same knocking characteristics as the petrol under test. The gasoline fraction from refining crude oil has an octane rating below 60, which is why you can't put it straight into a car (which needs 87 octane for 2-star and 93 octane for 4-star).

How does lead improve the octane rating?

This helps the petrol to burn more slowly and smoothly, preventing knocking and giving higher Octane ratings.

So what's the problem?

Studies indicated that children living near motorways seemed to have lower IQs than those living in areas with less lead pollution, suggesting that the lead was somehow linked to a lowering of brain function and intelligence in children. Also, car exhausts contain environmentally unfriendly gases, such as CO and nitrogen oxides. A catalytic converter can help to remove these gases, but it cannot be used on leaded petrol since the lead 'poisons' the catalyst.

Are there any alternatives to lead tetraethyl ?

Yes, there's another additive called MTBE, which stands for methyl tertiary-butyl ether, and it is designed to reduce carbon monoxide and ozone emissions as well as to boost Octane ratings.

How does it reduce CO levels?

The toxic gas carbon monoxide is formed by incomplete combustion of petrol. The oxygen atom in MTBE helps provide extra oxygen for complete combustion, and helps give it an Octane rating of 116.

So why is MTBE a problem?

Leaking petrol storage tanks and spillage have caused MTBE to get into groundwater. Although it is not very toxic, it is not very biodegradable either, and has a strong taste and smell, noticeable at the 15 parts per million level. There is now a strong movement to ban it from petrol.

Is MTBE used in the UK?

No, instead of MTBE we have toxic compounds like benzene (left) and toluene (right), with Octane ratings of around 106, added to our petrol !
