Knock Sensor Anyone?

OK - posted this on the General FAQ thread but I see it doesent get visited often.
Does anyone know why the knock sensors are not connected on S6 motors? I see the appropriately labeled wires and connectors are fitted but no actual sensors seem to be present - was this a "cost-cutting" excercise perhaps? Surely if the knock sensors were operating this would cure known problems like pinging under heavy acceleration and the hot start-up knock that occurs. Someone told me that the reason they were'nt fitted is due to the loss of performance as they do retard the timing when fitted - is this B&*^Sh#t or valid? Perhaps one or two of the more knowledgable guys can answer this one.
