Homebase - gone into administration

Just spotted on BBC that Homebase have gone into administration sadly. 2,000 jobs at risk.

I cannot remember the last time I set foot in one. It is more a hybrid home wares/DIY store and isn't good enough at either of those things to make me want to go there.

People go to the Range for their cheap home ware and B&Q if they need anything DIY.

Its our only DIY store so it would be a shame to see it go as its slightly different to the range, we also use it for gas.

They never seemed to come close to 'recovering' from the Bunnings debacle, which itself was a massive opportunity completely fked up (in my mind, very likely driven by one of the Big 4 creating 'synergies' in a pack which were palpable bks only discovered once it was too late).

Always seems dead when we pop in, and their stock is completely confused.

The owner of The Range has bought the name,the website and 70 stores which will be rebranded as The Range stores.
50 other stores will close

Were, they were founded by them.

Then sold to the owners of Bunnings, which was a massive stshow in almost every way (but could have been superb) - they then sold for a bargain to Hilco who are a restructuring firm who've been trying to sell them the last few years.

Sold some, but most still held by Hilco.

Homebase was started by Sainsbury's. Argos wasn't.

That BBC article is saying Sainsbury's have bought back some stores and may buy a few others. I would guess those are the ones that are co-located next door to some Sainsbury's superstores?

I actually started to use Homebase a lot more in past 5 years after moving as it was my nearest type store to me. I suspect it will be one for the chop and be closed down, as its not next to a Sainsbury, and there is a Range about a mile away from it, so I doubt they will keep both in same area.

nope, it was B&Q. I remember during the lockdown years my local ASDA turned their café area into a B&Q up until a year ago when it was removed and turned into a revamped pizza counter & hot/fast food.

Homebase was founded by Sainsbury’s not b and q in the late 70’s if I remember correctly.

I remember Do It All, which was owned by WHSmith. Shortly before they went under, they did a "Spend £10, get a £10 voucher".

I decorated my first house for virtually nuppence.

Wickes, toolstation, screwfix, selco (if you can get a trade card)… and even b and q are all superior. I used go into Homebase as they massively reduced stuff once a year. But they couldn’t possibly be a sustainable business.

Latterly, I think they became more 'decor' than DIY, so competed more with the likes of Dunelm and John Lewis than Screwfix.

Pretty much a drive past store, you would only stop and go in you needed to use the loo.

Ha! Guess who ordered a kitchen there a few weeks back.

Thank God my wife advised me to use the interest free option rather than just pay for it as I was going to do so not a penny out of pocket but hope the order is still fulfilled which it hopefully should be as it’s from a third party and I’ll be jiggered if I’m going kitchen shopping again any time soon.

Feel sorry for the staff esp before Christmas as no one wants that sort of grief and stress hanging over their heads and they’re a good bunch at our local store.

They are my nearest DIY store but I'll drive by them on the way to B&Q.

Yes, agree with that, for me they are handy for me for garden centre stuff as its 5 mins down the road as opposed to nearest garden centre which is 25-30mins away.
And I think they have (or the one near me at any rate) has a much better range of paint than Wickes etc that are next closest in distance.
B&Q are as good if not better, for paint etc but they are 20-25mins away from me, as opposed to 5 mins away at Homebase.
