Morning all, as per the title, I am looking for advice on either a Touareg or Grand Cherokee. Budget is about £18k. This would get me a 2015ish model with around 50k on the clock. I want to use it as an occasional towing vehicle for my business as well as my main car. Some off road ability is useful but my Hilux pick up does most of this. Any owners feedback or experience or advice generally would be useful. Cheers.

Hadn't really considered the Merc, not sure why. The Jeep does seem good value and the off road ability is appealing, but I am just not too sure about overall build quality and durability with them.

I considered the Grand Cherokee but had the same concerns as you. People either seem to love theirs or it was an unreliable mess. I’d read a couple of reports of oil pumps failing killing engines and while there were only one or two it stuck in my mind.

Fast forward a few months and my mate had one in at his garage. Oil pump failed killing the engine. He only had one option for another engine and it was 5k on a car worth not much more. Along with labour it ended up being a very big bill.

Even if something from the usual German brands goes wrong, you’ve usually got various different options whereas with the Jeep not as many people will work on it and the parts will be harder to find.

I have owned both. The jeep is a stronger chassis, but everything else is better on the VW.

Many thanks for the insights guys. I spoke to my local independent garage and they said that some of the early Jeeps (2008ish) had oil pump issues which was on the Merc engine. The VM engine was unknown to them so it is good to hear (well not good but you know what I mean) that they still have issues. The VW does make sense and the Merc is an interesting option that I really hadn't considered. I take it the Merc costs will be similar to the VW?

VW Tuareg or Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The only sensible answer to that question is 'NO!'

If you don't know whether you want it or not, don't buy it.

It isn't that I don't want it, I just want advice on my future purchase.

Two quite different vehicles, if you properly wanted either, you wouldn't consider the other.

Good heavens this place is going the way of X. Bloke asks a reasonable question, within a few hours the contributions start to deteriorate. Still on page one.

Sorry I am not sure why my question is so dumb. Similar type vehicle, similar engine, same purpose. I had ruled out the Land Rover Discovery 4 due to well known reliability issues but I fail to see why my post has been received by you in this way.

Ignore him. They are comparable for what you’ve asked for. I’d go for the VW or the GLE

Many thanks for the sensible and helpful replies, very much appreciated. I will rule out the Jeep and focus on the VW and GLE.

Evening all, bit of an update, but after much hunting I have just purchased a 2016 Touareg R Line. It is an absolutely cracking bit of kit, very comfy and decent performance for what it is. With the exception of one chap, the advice was as always very much appreciated.

Great choice OP, night and day better than a Cherokee.

Enjoy!

Good choice, they're lovely cars.
I was going to add I ran a 2016 GC Overland from 6 months old for 3 years - I know not really relevant now though but it was superbly comfortable, well built, well equipped, ran on air suspension, and I had zero issues over my ownership. I loved that thing.

I leased a 2015 R Line, did 30k miles and not a single mechanical issue, great cars.

The slight downer was I couldn't use Google maps and my iPhone at the same time, something about the RSAP profile.

The Audi's of that vintage had the same hardware but firmware that allowed the map data and voice traffic to all go via the iPhone.

Thanks for the approval posts, I have to say I love it. A lovely place to sit and a great thing to waft around in. Hopefully there are many trouble free happy miles ahead.
