A family friend is about to trade in a 2021 Jaguar XE P250 R-Dynamic, 35K miles, black. Kerbed wheels but otherwise seems a lovely car.

They'd be happy to sell the car to a private buyer for the trade in price, plus perhaps a few ££ to make it worth their while.

I dont know much about these, but the car could be bought at a good price. I think maybe £18.5K.

Its out of manufacturers warranty.

Anyone any experience of these, particularly the engine?

They're not a brand i'd previously thought of but the car does look lovely.

Ingenium engine, avoid. There's a reason they're a good price compared to equivalent models from other manufacturers.

The Diesels are definitely a red flag, but petrol models seem to be no worse than any other brand?

Fair enough, OP of that thread did end up having camshaft issues on their petrol though

The petrols are okay, the diesel is the one to avoid.

I bought an 11,000-mile 2020 XE P250 SE R-Dynamic 18 months ago. I think it is quite handsome in Caldera Red, and draws quite a few compliments.

It is reasonably comfortable, if not terribly roomy, is a brisk performer and corners and grips very well. It can cover journeys quickly without a great deal of effort.

The engine can be a bit gruff sometimes, more noticeable when revs rise in the lower gears, but on my usual journey (M11, A14, A10) it is not intrusive. I get 39-40mpg on my regular drive from Duxford to Ely in Cambridgeshire and back 4 times a week.

Like most modern stuff, it has too many gears, which spoils low-speed progress around sidestreets and negotiating speed bumps, and although the gearbox can be momentarily indecisive under certain circumstances, it has never presented me with a boxful of neutrals like the dreadful thing on the Volvo S60 that I ran previously (for all of 5 months).

I have had to eliminate a few creaks and rattles afflicting the interior, but I get the impression that its competitors are not immune from this either.

It is quite an enjoyable thing to drive, and I would not be unhappy to keep it a while longer. There is nothing of its type I'd particularly want to replace it with; an older Jag with more cylinders is a more likely replacement.

The car had a water pump issue when I got it which caused the fan to run permanently, but this was sorted at my convenience and paid for by the Nissan dealership I'd bought it from. In the 17,000 miles since, nothing has broken, failed, or fallen off it.

How is the space in the back?

I had an early 2019 XE 300 R-Sport from new, kept it for 3 years did 26k with no issues (other than a infotainment glitch fixed under warranty) it was good to drive, it was pretty quick but not mega saloon fast, comfortable on long runs, the space in the back isn't bad, ok for anyone under 6" I'd say. If I hadn't replaced it with the M4 I'd definitely miss it. I ordered the 250 originally but they dropped the 250 engine at the time mine was being built so upgraded, there's not a huge difference maybe 1 second off the 0-60 and a bit more poke in the mid-range. The thing I would say is the R-Sport suspension is quite firm so you definitely notice the potholes more than in the non-sport version.

A bit tight. I am 5' 10" and can squeeze in the back with the driver's seat how I have it, but the shape of the door aperture might cause problems for someone less than nimble.
