Sticky backing tape from alarm sensors, on wood veneer door. I can't get a thumb nail or blade under it, I've tried white spirit to soften it. Any ideas?

Does any of it move or loosen with a plastic blade - eg some kind of plastic scraper. If not to hand, what about the edge of a store card used like a chisel?

Go to a chemist & ask for Isopropyl alcohol. Failing that get yourself down to Halfords & buy some Rain X - which is, mostly, full of the former.
Spray, allow a short time to penetrate & use your nails to scrape off the main stuff. Then use a cloth to rub the remainder off.

As suggested above by Austin Metro, old plastic credit/store cards can work with a bit of time and patience. I've always found that heating with a hairdryer softens the adhesive and makes removal much easier. The least damaging solvent removal that I've found is Autoglym intensive tar remover (when left to soak in) but I'd be wary of any solvent on absorbent surfaces.
