So I've had my F82 M4 for 3 years now and starting to think about what's next ..

I need 4/5 doors
Similar performance to the F82
Ideally no more than 4yrs old
Budget up to £50k (£55k max)
I average 7k miles per year so fuel economy is less of an issue

Ideas so far
G80 M3
F90 M5
Alfa Romeo Guila Quadrifoglio

Left field
Jag F-Pace SVR
Porsche Panamera

Any suggestions?

RS6 was the first thing that came to mind.

F-pace SVR or Stelvio quadfog both excellent if you can put up with the less premium feeling interiors.

Happy shopping!

Cheers,

Chris

Saloon wise the Giulia would get the nod for me:

I have considered the RS6 but for the budget I would only find a high mileage or older example. How does the RS4 compare to the M3?

IMO it's not as good a steer as the M3 BUT for me it's the better car overall.

They are all smashing cars.

What sort of “flavour” would you like to replace the M4 is probably a better question?

Well I need rear doors as we occasionally take the other Half's Mother for journeys. No kids to cart around.

Want something fun with decent acceleration for overtaking on country roads. Reasonable boot as it will be a daily driver. Standard mod cons

It'll probably be bought on PCP (hence the up to 4 yes old)

Or yes: reversing camera is a must (having lost an eye years ago my short distance judgement with reverse parking isn't as good as it was)

I'm not 100% on the Alfa as they don't look 'special' enough to my eyes, but everyone who drives them raves about them. The G80 M3 stands out, but that face.... They look good in certain colours and hideous in others

I need try the SVR as I'm not sure about the SUV thing, too high up, but again reviews suggest they feel and handle like a sports saloon.

That's my mental meandering so far. Open to ideas....

I'd be seriously tempted by the F90 M5 which will be remembered as the last before it all went wrong at BMW.

I do keep coming back to the F90 M5... It also solves the V8 itch.... What's the maintenance costs like compared to the M4?

The Panamera, a Turbo or Turbo S is going to be too old I think and they are HUGE or at least they look huge!

If you've never had a V8, then I'd definitely be considering the F90 M5 for sure. thumbup

The F90 M5 is brilliant in my opinion.

It just feels monstrous to me when driving it. In gear it feels very quick.

So a bit of an update, took a 73 plate G80 M3 in Isle of Man Green out yesterday and it's an awesome machine. Looks like the numbers add up except for the shocking trade in value of my M4, so if I can get a better price for mine I'll be in the M3 next week.....

I had the choice between a G80 M3 and a Giulia QV. Went with the QV. Absolutely no regrets.

i could wax lyrical for hours, literally, but in the end i've boiled it down to two sentences.

the M3 is better in pretty much every way you can measure (except weight), but the alfa is better in every way you can't measure.

and

the M3 grabs you by the balls, the alfa grabs you by the heart.

but at the end of the day, you can't make a bad choice from the two.
