Hi , my first post having bought my 2012 Cayman yesterday!

Question , I am looking to upgrade to stereo to CarPlay. This seems like a bit of a nightmare to work out. I can’t even currently work out what version I have. 3.0 maybe.

How do I tell , have no nav in it and it has a cd player at the top of the head unit. Also does it matter what the latest version it is on?

Any help greatly appreciated!

There should be a lot online about this as it was a fairly common DIY job not long after the PCM v3 for the 9x7 models were released.

Hi

First of all thanks for coming back!

It is a black unit not the same as the picture sent , can’t post links as it won’t allow me. Need to be a member to 14 days!

I also can’t post pictures. I believe it is called a cdr 30.

Am I right in saying the I won’t have the issues with 3.0, 3.1 etc I can just find a suitable unit then good to wire in?

I have done car steroid in the past not sure how complicated this will be or any issues resulting?

Carplay will age much worse than the OEM stereo, don't bother changing.

I don't believe there is a well regarded CarPlay retrofit available for the CDR30, being

https://www.tradetecglobal.com/en/porsche-carplay-...

..you could ask these folk...

..they are best in the game for advice.

Or wait it out until Porsche release the 997/87 Gen 2 PCCM+ .... or remove the CDR30 and replace it with a Chinese copycat unit

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/1351219-carp...

or a Kenwood/Sony and the like.

I want something that is usable in today’s world , especially sat nav!

Some good info in this thread here.

The first post in there has a link to what I did which worked well, looked very OEM and was an easy DIY job on my 987.2 cayman.

Thank you will have a look . Enjoying the car so far, but stereo definitely needs some work. Might put on a discreet rear camera at same time , see how hard to get to back first!

As above, I'd wait for Porsche to bring out a unit for the 9x7.2. It won't be amazing, but it look decent and will maintain functionality that you lose with any aftermarket headunit.

Any guesses how long we'll have to wait for this?

987.1 PCCM came out Jan 2023 afaik. Last MY for them was 2008 (some registered in 2009 though).

Is it perhaps timed with the last cars moving out of the 15 year period for warranty etc? So last 987.2s 2012 could mean 2027 >_< That's all supposition on my behalf though, not sure how they rolled them out for the 911s.
