When I bought my house three years ago it came with a ADT alarm which seems to be a rebranded Honeywell Galaxy 2-20 C020. We've had a burgerly up the street so I'm now motivated to bring it back to life (at the moment it just makes a chime when the front door is opened - surprisingly useful!).

At the moment when you put the alarm code in the panel (branded ADT) says "'Status unset 02 event(s)" if you then scroll across using the buttons it says "Arc comms fail" and then "Tel Line Fail" and then "User Reset Required".

Now we don't have a phone line, so i'm guessing that is one of the problems! No idea what Arc comms is and I have no desire to pay ADT any money.

I just want the alarm to go off if one of the sensors trip rather than have it phone someone.

Is there a way to bring this back? I'm guessing ADT will have changed the default engineer code which is what I assume I need. It's all very neatly wired into the house so i'd rather not try and get a new system installed.

If I pull the cover off the box that is in the loft etc and remove the power (I assume there is a battery back up somewhere), will it go back to factory defaults?

Based if Berkshire if I need to get an actual engineer out (i'm reasonably handy tho and comfortable with electronics in general).

If you take any covers off you will trigger a tamper, it will make tha alarm ring and you will need an engineer code to reset it.
If you can download an installation manual for it it may have factory reset procedures in it, you can often find such info on the net.
If not just replace the panel and keypad, they are not particularly expensive and you should be able to use all of the PIRs, bell box, panic switches and door sensors again, you will then have complete control and be able to configure it from scratch

If you google the honeywell model number and factory reset lots of info will come up.

Try the DIYNot forums, although they are a bit cagey about telling you how to reset it to defaults. the default use is 1234 & Engineer is 112233 but that may not help. This is just one post on there but search for more:

https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/how-to-fully-re...

Post 15 may help & note there are 7 pages in the thread.

Thanks have posted a message on diynot.

When we say that taking the cover off will trigger the alarm and I will need an engineer code to reset it.... will the alarm stop if i enter the user PIN? or will i have an unstoppable alarm going off until the battery runs down or I find an engineer to come out?

Entering the user pin should silence the alarm but it will constantly flash up that engineer intervention is required until the engineer pin is put in and the fault cleared.

ARC Comms is Alarm Receiving Centre Comms….can’t talk to the monitoring station.

Our last home had an ADT alarm found the easiest approach was to buy a new board from Ebay (then I had all default codes to works from) and just use all the existing wiring, sensors etc. I did have to disconnect the battery from the bell box first to stop it triggering a tamper when the power was killed to the board. Then quickly remove the backup battery that is hopefully just inside the alarm box below the panel.

is it that easy to reactivate an ADT alarm and effectively have a free house alarm system? My guess is that if it was straightforward ADT would start removing their kit when contracts ended.

Ebay ones seem to be 80-100 quid, so I think i'll take a punt at resetting it myself first.

Not sure about tamper but you might be able to avoid the bell box sounding by temporarily connecting it to a 12v power supply or battery while you swap things over

I had the same

Old system. There are much better out there now

If you don't have a phone line, the alarm will work as "bells only". It won't notify you if triggered

Very easy to set up for an ADT engineer. There are instructions available online too but I'd just pay an engineer who will do it in 10 mins

Disconnect bell tamper, short z1 to com, downpower and power back up, engineer code should be reset to 1122 or 112233 without losing the rest of the programming. Then change usercode and engineer code to something of your choice, and remove everything from the communications area of the programming.
Guides on youtube, it isnt all that difficult.
If you completly fk it up disconnect the battery and remove the mains fuse, and the external sounder should stop after 15 minutes, then get an engineer out to do a takeover and maintenance.
Galaxys are still decent, just very dated compared to the competition, but if you want decent app features you can just swap the main panel and keypad, reusing existing sensors and wiring.
Euro76 is dirt cheap, easy to program and a drop in replacement. Texecom is a bit more advanced app wise, but more fussy to program.

Ah interesting that there are drop in replacements - I have mainly wired PIRs, with a couple of wireless ones and some door / window sensors (wired).

Euro76 = this kind of thing: https://www.pyronix.com/uk/products/euro-76

You would need to change your wireless sensors

This sounds very much like the procedure I did to reset the alarm when we moved - sounds a bit daunting but it really is pretty simple in practice. Once you have control, you can tailor it to your needs. We have a dog so I changed the activated zones on alarm set, programmed new fobs etc I also added a GSM dialler so that it calls my mobile if activated. If you can find the installer and user manuals online it will give you everything you need to know.
