Our 12 year old Ideal 'Heat 18' heat only boiler has a noisy venturi fan, cracked condensate pipework and a leaking heat exchanger (boiler switched off, syphon trap filling slowly over 6 hours, loosing pressure in the unvented radiator loop with no other signs of leaks or safety valves). The company that visited said it would be more efficient to replace for new and have the 10 year warranty with it.

The quote was for a remove and replace with a Glow Worm 18R boiler, horizontal GW flue and a Glow Worm magnetic filter - Fitted price of £2780 inc VAT

My guess was £2K before the quote came through so a little higher then expected, however checking online it does appear to be about right. I was hoping for some input from others if this is in the right ball park?

(Gloucester area just for reference)

I'd say on the money and far far less than what those rip off s British Gas wanted.

They wanted over £4,500 whilst nearly all our other quotes were £2,200 to £2,800.

Enjoy your new boiler smile

A replacement Ideal Heat 18 is about £1160 even from Screwfix.
Like for like fitting (by a gas man) is trivial. Even if he charges you a whole day, it should be no where near £2780

Sounds about right

I've used Boxt before and would recommend them, if you're looking for another option / quote

Watching with interest/

What are they proposing to replace it with? Does that include a new flue, etc.

Last one I paid for was 3k but that was a tenant with no hot water or heating in the depths of winter. Gas engineer was already there and I was in no position to get other quotes.

Also that was with a fairly big local firm rather than a one man band.

There doesn’t seem to be a straightforward pricing structure for getting a boiler replaced.
As commented above , boilers can be bought for 1 - 1.5k but installation costs are many thousands and most are normally a swap with all the pipe work in situ.
Any plumbers care to comment and update a layman?

Why do you think most are normally a swap with all pipework in situ?

Quote was for a remove and replace with a Glow Worm 18R boiler, horizontal GW flue (I already have an Ideal horizontal flue) and a Glow Worm magnetic filter

Got another company quoting soon so will have a comparison at least, will also ask for a specific 'like to like' Ideal Heat 18 install cost

Earlier this month I paid £3400 for a 24kw Worcester Bosch system boiler and magnetic filter - guy is WB accredited so I get a 10yr guarantee. Included a system flush, new flue, 2 x new zone valves, hive thermostat supply and install, and a wee bit of pipework adjustment on gas supply to new boiler. Full days work with 2 guys.

It was within £100 of what BOXT had quoted but I'd had these guys recommended so went with them. Suggests BOXT could be a decent option or at least their pricing is in the right ballpark.

I had pretty much the exact same thing from BG about 8-10 years ago.

I had BG Homecare cover and they told me my Worcester Heatslave 9.24 was on its last legs and needed replacing (to be fair it was breaking down pretty often and with 4 young kids in the house HW/CH was a high priority). I had a range of quotes from £1200 (mates rates) to £2,500. BG quotes me £5k without even coming round to check out the current fitting. When i told them they were twice as high as the next most expensive the answer was "What did you expect? we're British Gas" rofl

I paid £3k for a short notice, week before Christmas job last year. The Vaillant that went in was around £1200 iirc.

All pipework needed moving about.
Went from non-condensing to condensing which involved running a pipe from inside to outside and back in again through a very convoluted route.
Needs a chimney vent outside.
Few other bits to meet regs.
New CH pump
Fair but if time getting the whole system refilled.
16-ish hours labour all in, a couple of hours of that was due to a minor mistake they made. All done in a day.
