Removing private plate
Discussion
I'm looking at a car that comes with a private plate on.
I already have my private plate on retention so want to put it on the new car.
I want to put the current one on retention and replace it with my plate (already on retention)
Can I put the current on retention and replace with my plate at the same time
Or
Do I take the current one off and it gets the original plate on "xx58yyy" then put mine on?
I've put mine and taken it off several cars so I know the process, I just want to know if I have to change the plate effectively twice

From what I remember, you can't put a plate from the car onto retention and take another off retention onto a car as a single process.
You'll have to put the existing plate onto retention and then assign your plate once the other is confirmed. Can all be done in a day so not a massive fuss but annoying that these kind of situations aren't covered in process!

You have to give the logbook document reference number so not sure it could be done in a day as you wouldn't get that until the V5 arrives? You'll have to put the existing plate onto retention and then assign your plate once the other is confirmed. I'll see what happens. Just don't want to be getting plates made because the process is stupid.
First question is who is the RK on the V5C and do they want to keep the existing private plate?
The current owner should take off the existing plate and put it on retention if they want to keep it (£80 fee).
If not, then when you have purchased the car and got the new V5C, you can either:
Take off the existing private plate and put on retention (£80 fee) if you want to keep it, this will assign a generic year plate to the car. Then, when you have the references required put your personal plate on (no fee).
Or, if you do not want the existing plate simply put your personal plate on when you receive the V5C.
