Try downloading System Mechanic 4 which is free and contains a program that allows you to switch on & off start up programs. However it can be overwritten by core system programs so may not sort out the problem.

If you're on XP Pro and you just want to prevent programs from putting things in your startup folder you can set the permissions on it to deny write access via right click/properties/security. You can do the same to the 'run' registry keys too via regedit. It can make it a pain in the arse to install anything later on though.
TangoAlpha said:^ What he said. But because I have hidden files to be displayed, I also need to set the system attribute. Here's how you do it:
You could always set it as "hidden", it will still be there but you won't be able to see it
1. Go to Start, then Run.
2. Type in cmd. Click OK.
3. Type cd startm~1 and hit enter.
4. Type attrib startup (plus)s (plus)h and hit enter.
5. Type cd..(bs)..(bs)alluse~1(bs)startm~1 and hit enter (no spaces in this line).
6. Type attrib startup (plus)s (plus)h and hit enter.
That's it. It won't show anymore.
Replace (plus) with the addition symbol, and (bs) with the backslash key (the one beside your left shift key) - for some reason PH doesn't display these characters.
The "~" character can be typed by holding down shift and hitting the hash key.

if i ever need to how to i view it again?
In Windows Explorer go to the Tools menu, then Folder Options and then the View tab. Somewhere in that list is "Show hidden files and folders".
