We have booked a nice cosy cottage for a winter break for ten days near Lynton/Lynmouth, we have been to the area a few times in the past, but wondered if anyone could recommend any interesting days out not too far away, maybe off the beaten track, not the usual tourist haunts.

We have been to Boscastle, Minehead, and Dunster previously btw

We are members of the National Trust.

Failing that, we'll get the log fire going and read some good books. biggrin

Thanks in anticipation. smile

Lynmouth itself is nice (at least in summer...) There's a funicular that takes you up to a decent path to the valley of the rocks that's worth doing. Personally I love a windy walk on Saunton Sands too. And there's a disused railway that's good for a cycle/walk along the estuary from Instow to Bideford.

A day trip to Lundy if you're feeling brave?? biggrin

A few years ago we had a fabulous evening meal at a restaurant in Porlock Weir. (As we ate, a lady in a red dress walked in. Our (then) four year old suddenly fizzed with excitement and shouted ”It’s a party!”. Restaurant was small / cozy enough for everyone to crack up.

Even if you’re not eating, it’s a really interesting little place to visit.

Also Minehead for the West Somerset Railway if you like steam trains.

We stayed in a NT cottage a half hour walk east of Lynmouth a couple of years ago. Nice part of the world. A few things we did :

- Walk the coast path
- Lynton/Lynmouth. Not much there but what there is is nice. Try the Lynmouth Bay cafe - nice little garden out back
- Walks up on the moors (Chains?)
- Tar steps walk - starting at Withypool, south east Exmoor
- Walks through all the deep river valleys. Watersmeet, a NT property
- Open top bus ride to Minehead. And then quickly back out of Minehead!
- Day trip to Woolacombe
- Day trip to Bude

Pub food recommendation - Black Venus in Challacombe
